List of Hangul jamo

This is the list of Korean alphabet jamo (Korean alphabet letters or characters which represent consonants and vowels in Korean) including obsolete ones. This list contains information of location in Unicode mapping.

"Hanyang Private Use" is mapping system which is used in Hangeul Office word processor (version Wordian to 2007). This system maps old Hangeul to the Private Use Area in Unicode. Since Hangeul Office 2010, Hanyang PUA code was deprecated and replaced with the standard Unicode encoding approach (using syllabic system using a distinctive encoding for leading or trailing consonants (some of them are pairs but treated as a single letter, except in compatibility decomposition and for sorting purpose, and separate encoding of vowels.

Unicode also defines a large subset of precomposed Hangeul syllables made of two or three jamos; it also includes a system that allow composing larger syllables, or composing syllabic squares that would otherwise be non-conforming to the Korean standard orthography, possibly with help of special filler jamos (needed for showing jamos in isolation or for transcribing to Hangeul other languages than standard modern Korean). Also Unicode defines some compatibility jamos for additional pairs of consonants, or pairs of vowels.

Code points in orange were added in Unicode 5.2.[1] They should normally be displayed in the same syllabic square, but unupdated browsers may only show them in their decomposed form as separate jamos if there are no new fonts installed on the system to render them correctly.

Code points in pale violet red were corrected in Unicode 5.1 and KS X 1026.

Code points highlighted with yellow background are part of the modern Hangul subset which are arithmetically composable (in pairs or triples of jamos) to canonically equivalent Hangul syllables in U+AC00..U+D7AF:

  • U+1100..U+1112: 18 modern Hangul leading consonant jamos
  • U+1161..U+1175: 21 modern Hangul vowel jamos
  • U+11A8..U+11C2: 27 modern Hangul trailing consonant jamos
  • All other jamos (shown in the tables below without the highlighting background) are used less frequently in modern Korean, or were used historically (some simplified Korean input methods or keyboard layout may not allow entering them). Within them, the Hangul Compatibility characters are normally not reliably composable into syllabic squares (because of the ambiguity for delimiting syllables when using them), but they are used in legacy applications which cannot support or render the full Hangul syllable set such as low cost terminals or old printers: these compatibility characters may exist either in fullwidth variant, or in half-width variants (mostly used in terminals with low resolution).

Hangul syllables are also encoded by Unicode for use in modern Korean (their canonical decomposition mappings are NOT found in the UCD, but are specified with an arithmetic algorithm only in The Unicode standard, Chapter 3 Conformance) and are decomposable into equivalent sequences of two jamos (one in each of the first two subranges above) or three jamos (one in each of the three subranges above). Their initial encoding in Unicode 1.0 was different (and not compatible with later versions of Unicode) and were based on the compatibility jamos (ignoring the distinction between leading and trailing consonants, making the automatic composition of Hangul square sometimes ambiguous or wrong).

Consonants

Note that in the table below, the "Jamo" column show the consonants with their leading variant when they exist and are encoded in Unicode, otherwise they show their trailing variant only, or the Hangul compatibility jamo if they don't exist as standard (modern or historic) jamos.

Other characters

Hangul Jamo in Unicode 5.2.

These are not jamos, but are used in combination with other Hangul jamos and syllables.

  • Fillers: these are needed to allow correct processing of syllable separations and correct rendering of syllabic clusters in composition squares
    • Hangul Jamo Area: U+115F (leading), U+1160 (medial)
    • Hangul Compatibility: U+3164
    • Hanyang Private Use: U+F784 (leading), U+F806 (medial), U+F86A (trailing)
    • Halfwidth Jamo: U+FFA0
  • Tone marks (Bangjeom, 방점): were used in Middle Korean, written to the left of the syllabic cluster (but encoded after the leading Hangul jamo or syllable if encoded as a combining diacritic), and was used with the vertical presentation; for example in the Eonhaebon version (mixed Hanja and Hangul) of the Hunmin Jeong-eum Eonhae):
    • Single dot (Geoseong, 거성, 去聲) "ᅟ〮" (·): U+302E (high tone); do not confuse it with the "ㆍ" (U+119E) extended vowel jamo (or its associated compatibility jamo U+318D) which is used in a medial or final position of a syllabic cluster (and is encoded after leading consonnants)
    • Double dot (Sangseong, 상성, 上聲) "ᅟ〯" (:): U+302F (rising tone)
    • The absence of tone mark implied the low tone (Pyeongseon).
Notes: These tone marks are normally encoded in Unicode after the vowel they modify but they will be rendered by reordering to the left of the first leading consonants (choseong) of the syllabic cluster.
They were first encoded in Unicode as non-spacing combining marks, due to their most common and historic use with the vertical presentation, but they still need to have a positive advance-width to render Middle Korean texts in the modern horizontal presentation (to avoid collision with the previous cluster); their general category was letter changed from Mn to Mc (spacing combining mark), even if they don't add any advance-width in the traditional vertical presentation.
Legacy encodings before they were encoded in Unicode, or if fonts did not provide the glyph for them, used generic punctuations (middle dot "·", or colon ":") encoded before the cluster (but this causes confusion when parsing text, and they do not work well for the vertical presentation because they would render above the next cluster instead of to the left).
