Variety called the album "pulsating".[11] William Ruhlmann of Allmusic proclaimed that EWF "were trying to encapsulate every eclectic foray pursued by Motown" and "wanted to incorporate Sly & the Family Stone's horn-filled, gutbucket R&B and some of the fusion style of Weather Report." He went on to state that "on Last Days and Time, they succeeded in pulling all that into their orbit".[6] Billboard noted that "Earth, Wind & Fire's dynamic soul rock style is the main ingredients" of the album.[7] Ovid Goode Jr. of The Los Angeles Daily News declared that the LP is full of "moving tunes" that "sprouts forth with a fresh sound which sets it apart from many of the ho-hum aggregations around today".[9] Paul Sexton of Record Mirror also described Last Days and Time as a "formative" and "interesting" record.[10]
