Istituto Mater Boni Consilii

The Istituto Mater Boni Consilii or the Institute of the Mother of Good Counsel is a traditional Catholic community of priests who follow the Sedeprivationist school of thought. It is an Association of the Faithful, but not yet been canonically approved and set up by ecclesiastical authority as the institute holds that while the current occupant of the papacy is a duly elected pope, but unless he recants the changes brought by Vatican II, he lacks authority to either teach or govern.[1]

History

The founders of the Institute seceded in 1985 from the Society of St. Pius X under the leadership of Francesco Ricossa; the three other founders were (then) Fr. Franco Munari, Fr. Curzio Nitoglia (who returned to the SSPX), and Giuseppe Murro. The Institute is confined to Western Europe, and is strongest in Italy, France and Belgium. It operates a seminary at Verrua Savoia near Turin, Italy. It liturgically resembles many others faithful sacerdotal groups in its rejecting the use of the 1962 Liturgical changes of the Mass, Calendar and Office, preferring the earlier version codified by Pius X.

The needs of the Institute were formerly met by Bishops Robert McKenna and Franco Munari. To relieve these duties, Bishop Robert McKenna consecrated Fr. Geert Jan Stuyver as a bishop,[2] who now administers to its needs.

The Institute also uses the name Sodalitium Pianum as an alternative name; this was the name of an unofficial group of theologians and others set up in the early twentieth century by Umberto Benigni to report to him those thought to be teaching Modernist doctrines.[3]
