According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.2 square miles (91.1 km²), all of it land.

At the 2000 census there were 1,043 people, 301 households, and 242 families living in the town. The population density was 29.6 people per square mile (11.4/km²). There were 315 housing units at an average density of 9.0 per square mile (3.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.66% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.29% Asian, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.10% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.[1] Of the 301 households 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.1% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% were non-families. 15.9% of households were one person and 6.6% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.30.

The age distribution was 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% 65 or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 73.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 65.2 males.

The median household income was $42,083 and the median family income was $46,389. Males had a median income of $27,344 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,128. About 7.3% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.3% of those under age 18 and 30.9% of those age 65 or over.
