Con artist Makoto "Edamame" Edamura successfully tricks a woman into buying an expensive water filtration system she really didn't need with help from his partner Kudou. Shortly afterwards, the two try to con the French con man Laurent Thierry, but end up getting conned by him instead. With law enforcement in pursuit, Edamame runs away and spots Laurent in a taxi. He hitches a ride with Laurent to Haneda Airport and then catches a flight to Los Angeles. Laurent takes Edamame to Beverly Hills to meet up with famed movie producer and secret drug kingpin Eddie Cassano at his Beverly Hills mansion, and is introduced to Laurent's partner Abigail "Abby" Jones. Abby, pretending to be a wannabe actress and hanger-on of Cassano's, is fed a drug in the form of a Japanese-style hard candy called Sakura Magic and feigns a drug-induced trance in order to convince Cassano to buy it from Laurent. Not pleased with the way Laurent has been using him, Edamame tries to run away, but is captured due to the tracking device that Laurent secretly placed on him. He is knocked unconscious by Abigail and regains consciousness only to find himself hanging from the Hollywood Sign.

Edamame recalls the events that led him to becoming a con man. Struggling to find work due to his father's criminal past, he got a job as a salesman for Kudou's company to support his ailing mother, only to find that the company has been engaging in consumer fraud without his knowledge. The police did not believe he didn't know about the scam, and Edamame was sent to prison. After being released on parole, Edamame's criminal record prevented him from getting a new job, and his mother passed away. With no other way to making a living, Edamame approaches Kudou offering to partner with him and become Japan's greatest con man. In the present, after Laurent and Abigail cut Edamame down from the Hollywood sign, Laurent explains that Sakura Magic is fake and he is using its rumored existence to scam Cassano. That night, Laurent meets with Cassano and makes a deal to sell a huge batch of Sakura Magic to him. Not pleased with his role in this scheme, Edamame walks out and reflects while holding a gashapon figure of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who he considers to be the greatest con man in history, after being harshly criticized by Abby. Two days later, Edamame greets Laurent and Abby at Cassano's mansion with a renewed sense of confidence.

After walking out, Edamame rented and watched Razzie Rising, a movie directed by Cassano. The next morning, he was prepared to return to Japan, but at the airport he was captured by Salazar, a former gang boss now in Cassano's employ. With Edamame forced to stay until the deal is complete, he decided to pretend that he created Sakura Magic, offering to sell Cassano a fake fake formula for the drug for a much higher price. After Laurent and Abby arrive, Cassano asks for proof of Edamame's credentials, which they fake by having Kudou's company act as doctors at the pharmaceutical research center where Laurent claimed that Edamame worked. That night, Cassano discusses an alternative location for the deal knowing that LAPD detective Anderson has been hot on his trail. On the way there, a car chase between Cassano's car, driven by Salazar, and Anderson ensues, but they manage to shake Anderson off. Cassano reveals that he is bribing Anderson, and the chase was staged to keep the LAPD from becoming suspicious. Everybody arrives at the trade location, an abandoned cider brewery now used to prepare drugs. Cassano orders Edamame to make Sakura Magic himself, and when Edamame claims that conditions are not ideal for making the drug, Cassano offers to renovate it. Cassano sends Edamame to stay at Salazar's house until the new lab is complete, separating him from Laurent and Abby. FBI agent Paula Dickins arrives and assumes command of Anderson's unit in order to both Cassano's drug network and Laurent's gang.

Edamame has a dream of his childhood when he looked up to his father, lawyer Seiji Ozaki. With Edamame under Salazar's watch at all times and a week remaining until the lab is ready, Abby sneaks in at night so Edamame can take lessons from Laurent and a drug cook via videoconferencing and construct a plausible fake version of Sakura Magic to fool Cassano. The next day Edamame goes sightseeing with Salazar, visiting Grauman's Chinese Theater and attending a baseball game at Dodger Stadium, and finds out that Salazar has a son, living in foster care after the death of Salazar's wife, who he is missing a visit with because of Cassano's command that he entertain Edamame. At Edamame's behest, they pick Tom up and take him to a theme park so he can spend the day with his father. While using the restroom, Edamame is approached by Paula and Anderson. Paula tells him that she is well aware of the scheme and coerces him into acting as a mole to aid an FBI sting operation to arrest Laurent and Cassano, in exchange for which they will clear Edamame of wrongdoing and return him to Japan. Edamame discovers a hidden camera in his bedroom at Salazar's home, meaning his contact with Abby and Laurent has been found out. The next day, everybody convenes at Cassano's mansion for a party, unaware that there is a traitor among them, but to Edamame's relief, Cassano accuses his financial manager. Edamame confronts Salazar about the camera and asks him why he didn't expose him to Cassano, and Salazar explains that he became a gang lord and later Cassano's bodyguard out of a desire to rise above his poor upbringing and give his son a better life. This reminds Edamame of his own father's arrest on suspicion of aiding a human trafficking ring, prompting him to agree to cooperate with Paula and the FBI on the condition that they let Salazar go free.

With the laboratory ready, Edamame goes through the motions of making Sakura Magic while wearing the glasses with the FBI bug, despite Paula's earlier refusal to absolve Salazar of blame. Upon completion, a SWAT team commanded by Paula breaks into the laboratory. Abby steals a gun and aims at an officer and is shot down, along with Laurent when he tries to protect her. Distraught, Edamame attacks Paula and holds her at gunpoint, threatening to shoot her if the FBI and LAPD don't open a path out for him and Salazar. In the confusion, Cassano blows up the lab. Cassano attempts to escape, but Edamame chases after him, and Cassano viciously beats him before Salazar arrives and saves Edamame by punching him out. The three are taken to the FBI's surveillance trailer, but rather than arrest Cassano, Paula agrees to free him and destroy evidence of his involvement for a bribe of $100 million. Edamame is furious, but is knocked unconscious by an unseen assailant. Edamame awakens later on an island, where Laurent and Abby greet him and Paula reveals her true identity as Cynthia Moore, part of Laurent's gang. At Cynthia's villa, where Laurent's gang are celebrating the success of their scam and Cassano's downfall, Laurent explains that everything was staged; the FBI officers were all part of his crew and their weapons were just props. He and Abby faked their deaths to divert all the police's attention towards Cassano. He also tells Edamame that Salazar has given up on being a gangster to focus on being a father, aided by a reward from the FBI he obtained for turning Cassano in. After the party, Edamame returns to Japan to turn himself in and use his share of the profits to compensate the victims he helped Kudou scam. Cassano is arrested and interrogated by the real Paula Dickins.

Edamame spends the next two years in prison, having taken up work as a mechanic while incarcerated. After being released, he begins his new life working as a car mechanic at Nakanoshima Heavy Industries, vowing to never get involved with Laurent again. The owner Shougo Nakanoshima shows Edamame his propeller plane and teaches him how to maintain it, ultimately offering the chance to work as a mechanic for an upcoming air race, which he eventually accepts. Meanwhile Danny, an arrogant manager, fires Chris, an employee he had sexually harassed, laughing off her vow to sue him. Danny goes to Las Vegas where he meets Cynthia, who introduces him to an underground boxing ring and convinces him to bet huge amounts of money on Abby in the fixed matches there. Once Danny grows confident and bets all his money, Abby loses the match and Danny loses everything. He brings police to the location of the boxing den, but finds the ring gone and proof of Danny's crimes where it once stood. Cynthia leaves the money to Chris, with a note wishing her happy birthday from an old friend from London. Some time later, Laurent's gang arrives at Edamame's workplace to reveal they have formed an air racing team as part of their next con and had him trained as a mechanic for that purpose, and Edamame grudgingly joins. Abby takes a plane Edamame worked on for a test flight, forcing him to ride along. They evacuate by parachute after the plane explodes in midair due to the effects of a capsule Laurent, unbeknownst to Edamame, had planted in the oil tank.

Abby recalls her dark past as she prepares to compete in the Pathfinder Air Race in Singapore as the pilot for Team Confidence. While watching the races, Laurent informs Edamane about the targets of their scam, brothers Clark and Sam Ibrahim, a popular pilot and the tournament organizer. Sam is rigging the tournament by paying off competitors to lose to Clark and boost his popularity while cheating gamblers out of their money. However, one of the competitors, Luis Muller, rebelled and was gravely injured by a bomb Sam planted in his plane and detonated during a race against Clark. Abby passes the qualifying round, but nearly passes out after spotting a couple who resemble her parents in the crowd. That night, Abby and Cynthia, having formed the only female pilot/owner team in the event's history, meet Sam and Clark at the rooftop pool of the Marina Bay Sands. Cynthia convinces Sam to rig the tournament final to have Abby race Clark and take advantage of the public draw of a female competitor while Edamame spams social media to lend credence to her claim. After Cynthia returns, Edamame asks Laurent about Abby's background. It is revealed that Abigail was a ballet prodigy as a child, but her life was shattered when her parents died in the bombing of Baghdad and she became a child soldier. The next day, Abby has her first match against Tootoo Vialli, but falls behind, as Sam refused to honor the agreement and Cynthia's seduction attempts are ineffective on him. With Abby's memories of her time as a soldier interfering with her performance, Edamame's cheering causes Abby to snap out it and win the match.

Edamame takes Abby for a ride on the Singapore Flyer and tries to get to know her better, but she refuses to acknowledge him as a partner. Laurent's gang set up an underground casino at the Marina Bay Sands. Cynthia tries to seduce Sam again but is rebuffed, so Laurent enacts his backup plan to have Edamame infiltrate Clark's maintenance crew. Laurent invites Luis and his wife Isabelle to join them and vouch for Edamame, but Luis refuses to help unless they kill Sam. The next day, Clark's mechanic Kevin leaves after being told that his London home caught fire, and Isabelle introduces Edamame to Clark as a former mechanic from Luis's team. Edamame insinuates that Luis's crash was due to someone tampering with the engine. That night, Edamame sneaks into the hangar and is apprehended by a group of mysterious men, who strangely abandon him almost immediately. The next day, Edamame offers to join Clark's mechanic team, claiming he can improve his plane's performance, and Sam puts him to the test. Sam doubts Edamame improved the engine, but a group of onlookers arranged by Edamame come to praise Clark's flying. Edamame's kidnappers approach him again, along with Shi Won, posing as their boss and Luis's former patron. She tells Sam that Edamame was in on a scheme involving the underground casino and the one responsible for Luis's accident. Edamame shows Sam, assuming the false identity of Turkish restaurant owner Mike Portnoy, the underground casino, where they are greeted by Kudo. That night, Abby rides the Singapore Flyer alone as she gazes at her dented ballet medal.

Abby flashes back to her past as she prepares for her next race. Sam places a bet of S$300,000 on Abby, who wins. That night, Laurent's gang discuss whether or not Sam will go all in, with Laurent believing his greed and lack of available funding will force him to. While in bed, Abby looks up information about Luis online and remembers the day she won the medal in a ballet recital, only to be caught in the bombing of Baghdad as she and her parents walked home. She later became a child soldier, and was badly injured by a grenade during combat. The next day, Sam bets S$1 million on Abby, who wins her next race as well. However, Laurent reveals Mike's true identity as Sam and bans him from the casino for gambling under a false identity. Clark wins his next race, and Edamame proposes that he go and place bets on Sam's behalf. Sam agrees and instructs Edamame to bet S$2.5 million on Caio Bisconti. Before the race, Cynthia visits Caio's hangar and seduces him while Abby secretly drops a tiny explosive into his plane's fuel compartment. The explosive causes the plane's engine to malfunction, forcing Caio to make an emergency water landing and causing Sam to lose the bet. That night, Edamame goes looking for Abby, but Isabelle tells him that she went out for a walk with Luis. Abby takes Luis to the Gardens by the Bay, where she demands to know whether or not he was part of the 2003 bombing of Baghdad and how many lives he has taken, while holding him at knifepoint.

Abby attacks Luis, but Edamame intervenes, and Isabelle tells Luis not to give up on life yet. On the night before the finals between Abby and Clark, Edamame and Sam discuss how to get back the money he lost on the last race. Edamame suggests Sam go apologize in person for his deception. Sam is allowed back into the casino and bets everything he has on Clark. Three days before the finals, Edamame was given the tiny explosive used on Caio's plane to use on Clark's. He and Isabelle talk in Fort Canning Park, where she tells him of Luis's past as a stunt pilot after the war and his mentoring of Clark. She reveals that ever since the incident, Luis has longed to fly again. That night, Edamame visits Clark to convince him to race for real, and Clark reveals that he and Luis wanted to race each other for real and defied Sam's orders, and that he now blames himself for hurting Luis. After hearing Clark's story, Edamame decides not to use the explosive. Edamame and Abby convey this information to Luis and propose a bet. On the day of the finals, Luis pilots Abby's plane in the final race against Clark. Recognizing the maneuvers only Luis is capable of pulling off, Luis and Clark race for real, performing aerial stunts along the way. Clark edges out Luis to win the tournament, but Sam is fooled into believing that Abby won due to the use of tinted cellophane screens on the casino windows and doctored footage showing Abby being declared the winner. After Sam finds out about the con, he returns only to find the casino gone and tries to kill Edamame and Abby, but they escape by parachuting out of the window. Meanwhile, Clark and Luis look forward to the next time they can race each other for real.

In Nice, Laurent sketches Cynthia along the shorelines while Edamame, working at a Japanese restaurant, argues with the Chinese cooks over how to properly make sushi. Later that day, Edamame, Laurent, and Cynthia eat at a boarding house restaurant, and Cynthia notices a painting on the wall that resembles something from the legendary Spanish painter Sergio Montoya. The next day, Edamame attempts to apologize to the chefs, but before that a customer harshly criticizes the food leading the head chef to return to China and being mistakenly called a Korean. Back at the boarding house, the owner Sebastian and his daughter Marie inform Edamame that their business is in debt and will close soon, and Edamame comes up with a plan to buy the painting for 20,000. Edamame and Cynthia go to Paris and meet up with Abby. They arrive at an art gallery where that critic from earlier browses the selection. Edamame swaps the prices while he is not looking, and he complains about the absurd prices leading him to walk out. At another gallery, Cynthia and Abby bring the painting in after Kudo ushers away the employee. When Cynthia recognizes that the critic is James Coleman, the world's best art appraiser, she tells Edamame to abort the operation because James cannot be fooled. However, to everybody's surprise James purchased the painting for €25,000. Later, Edamame gives the money to Sebastian and Marie, but when Sebastian turns on the TV, it is revealed that the painting is actually an authentic work by Montoya called Snow of London valued at €20 million. Afterwards, Cynthia decides that the next operation is to steal the painting back from James.

The operation begins with Laurent's gang watching an art auction with James as the auctioneer. Afterwards, Abby approaches James asking to work for him, but is turned away. Meanwhile, Edamame and Kudo work as gardeners at the estate of Farrah Brown, the CEO of a fashion company who is a close business partner of James, in order to set up a wire tap. Through the wire tap, Laurent's gang learns that James and Farrah are working together behind the scenes with Farrah willing to buy any painting James wants. Cynthia recalls her time when she first met aspiring artist Thomas Meyer while working as a coffee shop waitress training to be a stage actress. The next day, Cynthia asks Edamame to paint while she continues to recall her time with Thomas. Cynthia became his model during a time when Thomas was struggling, and the two dated, and then fell in love. Later that day, as James prepares to auctioneer another art auction, Abby asks James again to help out claiming that Laurent has been stalking her, but is turned away again. At the end of the auction, the Snow of London goes up for bidding, and Laurent wins it for £30 million when Farrah's butler Tim stops her from bidding any higher out of concern for her well-being. Angered by Farrah's inability to win the auction, James decides to hire Abby. That night, Cynthia explains that the next step in the plan is to sell a forgery of the Snow of London to Farrah with Thomas painting the counterfeit. Cynthia recalls her time when Thomas was recognized by James for his talent to create replicas of famous paintings.

Edamame looks for Thomas and learns that he has a £2 million debt. Cynthia continues to recall her history with Thomas as after Thomas was discovered by James, he was assigned to make art forgeries for James, which earned James the nickname James Bond of the art world. While Thomas got a new studio and a well-paying job, that meant being used by James and not seeing Cynthia for a long time. The two would meet for the final time at a fancy restaurant when the two ended their romantic relationship. Edamame finds Thomas and asks him to meet Cynthia at the restaurant they last met each other to ask him to make a forgery of the Snow of London in exchange for paying off his debts. Meanwhile, Abby tells James that Laurent is an underground art dealer who sells the paintings he won to the mafia in order to convince him to attend the private auction the Snow of London is being sold at. After dinner, Edamame sees Thomas and finds out that he got himself into debt by quitting his painting jobs and taking out loans to buy all of his forgeries to keep them out of the public. Edamame hands Thomas a tin that contains a picture of a wedding ring he sketched for Cynthia to let him know that Cynthia still cares for him, as well as to convince him to take revenge against James for sending him down this path. The next day, Edamame presents Thomas with the Snow of London and asks him to create a forgery of it and completes it several days later.

With the Snow of London replica finished, Thomas's debt is paid off. Meanwhile, Laurent's gang learns that Farrah plans to sell off her real estate for £50 million as they figure out what the target price should be for the Snow of London. The private auction begins the next day in which all the bidders except James and Farrah are Laurent's associates. After James and Farrah enter the venue, Abby tells Tim that only he can help Farrah. The auction commences with the bidders "overbidding" for the paintings much to James's disgust. After Farrah overhears Kudo and Si-Won talking about the Snow of London's starting bid of £70 million, she leaves the auction area to ask Tim to get £20 million, while Tim warns her that satisfying James's lust for art will not win him over. The auction resumes with the Snow of London up for bidding. Abby informs James that Farrah is apparently feeling ill and will pay up to £70 million, while Cynthia sits in Farrah's seat. Cynthia aggressively bids against James going over £70 million much to everybody's surprise, but to everybody's relief James continues to raise his bid, winning the painting for £100 million. That night, James, having paid for the painting out of his bank account, tries to ask Farrah for the money, but is ignored as Farrah cuts her ties with James and uses the paintings she bought for James to open an exhibit at a museum on Tim's advice. Some time later, Laurent's gang returns to Nice to return the Snow of London to Sebastian and Marie. With Marie noticing that something is different about the painting, Edamame apologizes for giving James the real painting. Marie responds by saying that she prefers the replica because of the effort that went into it. Before leaving London, Cynthia has one last meeting with Thomas to find closure over their shared past, but remain friends. Edamame returns to the restaurant hoping to get his job back only to find out that it had been converted into a Thai restaurant.
