Grand Rapids Charter Township is a charter township of Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 16,661 at the 2010 census,[3] up from 14,056 at the 2000 census.

Geography

The township is in central Kent County and is bordered by the cities of Grand Rapids and East Grand Rapids to the west, the city of Kentwood to the south, Ada Township to the east, and Plainfield Charter Township to the north.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Grand Rapids Township has a total area of 15.6 square miles (40.3 km2), of which 15.3 square miles (39.7 km2) are land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km2), or 1.42%, are water.[3]

Demographics

At the 2000 census there were 14,056 people, 4,852 households, and 3,779 families in the township. The population density was 911.6 per square mile (351.9/km²). There were 5,000 housing units at an average density of 324.3 per square mile (125.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 95.80% White, 0.99% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.30%.[1]

Of the 4,852 households 40.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.4% were married couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.1% were non-families. 19.8% of households were one person and 11.7% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the township the population was spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% 65 or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.

The median household income was $66,250 and the median family income was $76,021. Males had a median income of $52,135 versus $36,011 for females. The per capita income for the township was $30,531. About 2.6% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.4% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
