History

The G League Select Team was formed in 2020, as part of the NBA G League's NBA professional pathway program, a platform which is intended as an alternative for prospects instead of playing for a collegiate team. The team will be based in Los Angeles.[1] The idea for the G League to finance the development of prospects outside a collegiate program was first touted in 2018, though the plan was altered to convince prospects to decide against playing in leagues outside the United States that could offer more money.[2]

On April 16, 2020, Jalen Green, the highest ranked player in the 2020 high school class according to ESPN, became the first player to join the G League Select Team.[3] Green was soon joined on the team by fellow five-star recruits Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix, both former college commits, as well as Kai Sotto of the Philippines.[4] On June 9, 2020, former NBA player and coach Brian Shaw was named head coach of the G League Select Team.[5]

The team will only play non-competitive games in the G League; only playing ten to twelve games which have no bearing in league standing against other G League teams. It will also participate in training and exhibition games against other G League teams and international basketball clubs.[2] The team is not affiliated with any existing NBA G League or NBA franchise.[4]
