The song was released as a single on February 28, 1995, before the release of King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime. That March, the band appeared on the British television program Top of the Pops to promote the single, later performing it on MTV Europe, Canal+'s Nulle Part Ailleurs and The Jon Stewart Show.[1] The single reached number 16 on the UK Singles Chart,[2] and number 12 on the Australian ARIA Charts;[3] becoming the 91st most-played song on Australian radio that year.[4] The song was featured on an episode of Beavis and Butt-head[5] and the soundtrack of the 1996 Italian film Jack Frusciante è uscito dal gruppo.[6] In addition, "Digging the Grave" along with fellow King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime track "Ugly in the Morning" both appeared in the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode "Being Frank".

A video for the song was recorded, directed by Marcus Raboy, who was credited as Alan Smithee.[7] The video featured Dean Menta on guitar, even though Trey Spruance played on the actual recording; Roddy Bottum, the band's keyboard player, also appears as a guitarist. The video was later included on the collection Who Cares a Lot?: The Greatest Videos.
