Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004

Denmark selected their entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 in Istanbul, Turkey through the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2004. The winner was Thomas Thordarsson with the song "Sig Det' Løgn", which was translated into and sung in English as "Shame on You".

Before Eurovision

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2004

After missing out on the 2003 contest, DR returned to the format of 2002, with one final and no semi-finals. A total of 315 songs were submitted, with 10 songs being selected to compete. All songs had to be sung in Danish and translated into English for Eurovision.

The final was held in the Aarhus Kongrescentrum in Aarhus on 7 February 2004 and was hosted by Natasja Crone and Peter Mygind. The winner was selected over two rounds of televoting. In the first round, the top five entries were selected to proceed to the second round. In the second round, the results of the public televote were revealed by Denmark's four regions, with the televoting figures of each region, alongside with the SMS voting figures being converted to points and led to the victory of "Sig det' løgn" performed by Tomas Thordarson.[1][2]

At Eurovision

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, a semi-final round was introduced in order to accommodate the influx of nations that wanted to compete in the contest. Due to missing the 2003 contest, Denmark had to compete in the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2004. Thordarsson sang in the 19th position, following Croatia and preceding Serbia and Montenegro. At the close of the voting, the song had received 56 points, placing 13th in a field of 22. Denmark did not qualify to the final. Therefore, Denmark had to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2005.
