The official "A91" name[1][2] was assigned in the early 2000s. On many road signs on the route, the marker still shows the letter A without the number.

History

The construction, completed by its current operator ANAS, finished in 1959 during additional work on the entry into the airport itself (which took place in different phases between 1956 and January 1961). Initially classified as SS 201, it became an official highway in 1969.[3]

For the Great Jubilee of 2000, the highway was enlarged with a third lane in the stretch from the Grande Raccordo Anulare to the airport, with the exception of a small stretch of approximately 4 km (about 2.5 miles) towards Rome. Orange light lamps with red LEDs on the sides of the highway were also installed to increase visibility.

In May 2010, construction was completed on a roadway coplanar with the motorway to create connections with the commercial areas developed in adjacent areas, such as Parco Leonardo or the new Fiera di Roma.[2]

Toll

The Finance Act of 2011 introduced a direct toll on motorways and highways managed directly by ANAS to reduce the service fee payable by the company for the management and maintenance of the road.

The act[4] provided an introduction of a new toll system by December 2011 and, according to an attached technical report, was supposed to be a "free flow" or electronic toll instead of traditional booths.

Route

The highway is 18.5 km (11.5 miles) long, in which 11.9 km (7.4 miles) of it is from the airport to the Grande Raccordo Anulare junction. The highway is mainly a straight path, except for a curvilinear stretch that follows the Tiber bend and three wide curves along the viaduct of the Magliana, which is the last stretch in Rome.

The A91, along with the A24, are the only two highways in Rome that passes through an urban section within the Grande Raccordo Anulare.
