Alec Bohm

Alec D. Bohm (born August 3, 1996) is an American professional baseball third baseman in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

Early life and high school

Bohm was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Dan and Lisa Bohm.[1] He attended Roncalli Catholic High School in Omaha, Nebraska.[2] Bohm hit .526 as a junior, and .533 (leading the state of Nebraska) as a senior.[1][3] In August 2015, he won the Connie Mack World Series Home Run Derby.[4] Bohm was not drafted out of high school.[5]

College

Bohm played college baseball at Wichita State University, where he majored in Sport Management.[1] As a freshman in 2016, he hit .303/346/.489 with six home runs and 30 runs batted in (RBI) in 178 at bats.[6][7] Collegiate Baseball named Bohm a First Team Freshman All American.[1] He followed his freshman season by playing for the Wilmington Sharks of the collegiate Coastal Plain League, hitting .330/.407/.502 with 11 home runs (3rd in the league) and 51 RBIs (leading the league) in 203 at bats, played in the All Star Game, and won the CPL Home Run Derby.[8][9][10][11] Baseball America named Bohm the league's Number 1 prospect.[12][13]

As a sophomore in 2017, Bohm hit .305/.385/.519 with 11 home runs (8th in the Conference) and 40 RBIs in 233 at bats.[14] He was named First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference.[5] After the season, Bohm played for the Falmouth Commodores of the collegiate Cape Cod League, with whom he hit .351 (2nd in the league)/.399/.513 with 10 doubles (3rd), 5 home runs (10th), and 28 RBIs (3rd) in 154 at bats, and played in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game.[1][15][16]

In his junior season, Bohm hit .339/.436/.625 with 16 home runs (leading the American Athletic Conference), 57 runs (also leading the Conference), 14 doubles (tied for 2nd), 55 RBIs (leading the Conference), 9 stolen bases (3rd), 28 strikeouts, and 39 walks (2nd) in 224 at bats in 57 games.[17] He was named to the Baseball America First Team All-America team.[18]

Minor leagues

Bohm was drafted third overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft.[19] He signed with the team for a signing bonus of $5.85 million.[20]

Bohm made his professional debut with the Class A Short-Season Williamsport Crosscutters; he also played in 2018 for GCL Phillies East and the GCL Phillies West.[21] Bohm was placed on the disabled list with a left shin contusion on July 14, and was activated on August 20.[22][23] In 139 at bats over 40 games at third base for the three teams, he hit .252/.335/.324 with 17 RBIs and 3 steals.[21] MLB Pipeline named Bohm the Number 50 prospect in baseball, MLB.com ranked him Number 59, and Baseball America named him Number 65.[24][25][26]

Bohm began 2019 with the Lakewood BlueClaws.[27] After hitting .367/.441/.595 in 93 plate appearances with nine doubles, three homers and 11 RBIs in 22 games, he was promoted from Lakewood to the High-A Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League.[28] After batting .329/.395/.506 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 40 games with Clearwater, Bohm was promoted a second time to the AA Reading Fightin Phils on June 20, with whom he batted .269/.344/.500 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs in 238 at bats.[29] He was named to the 2019 All-Star Futures Game.[30] With all three teams combined in 2019, he batted .305/.378/.518 with 21 home runs and 80 RBIs in 475 at bats as he played 83 games at third base and 24 games at first base.[31]

After the season, he was selected to play in the Arizona Fall League for the Scottsdale Scorpions.[32] On September 12, 2019, Bohm was named the winner of the Paul Owens Award, recognizing him as the Phillies best minor league position player for the past season. [33] And also, on October 10, he was selected for the United States national baseball team in the 2019 WBSC Premier 12.[34]
