Biography
Al-Daraqutni was born in the year 918 (306 according to the Muslim calendar) in the Dar al-Qutn (Arabic: دار القطن) quarter of Baghdad, whence he got his nisba. Since childhood, he studied with Abu'l-Qasim al-Baghawi, Abu Bakr ibn Abu Dawud, Abu Bakr ibn Ziyad al-Naysaburi, Abu Ubaid al-Qasim (his brother) and many other scholars.
His learning was so wide that many scholars felt there was no one like him. Khatib al-Baghdadi referred to him as "the imam of his time" and Abu'l-Tayyib al-Tabari (d. 450/1058) called him the "Commander of the Faithful of the Hadith", for which he was specially famous. He taught Hadith to Hakim al-Nishaburi (d. 405/1014) and Abu'l-Hasan Isfaraini (d. 406/1015).[3]
He died in 385/995 and was buried in the cemetery of Bab al-Dayr in Baghdad, Iraq, near the grave of Maruf Karkhi.[3]
