  • 15/16 February – Protests against the visiting United States Sixth Fleet
  • 28 March – Earthquake in Alaşehir
  • 8 April (and the following days) – Widespread student demonstrations
  • 12 April The biggest opera house in Turkey, Atatürk Cultural Center in İstanbul, was opened
  • 3 May – Demonstrations after the burial service of İmran Öktem, the former chief of the Court of Cassation.
  • 25 May – Galatasaray won the championship of the Turkish football league[2]
  • 11 August – Bülent Ecevit, the secretary general of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), stated his motto: “The soil belongs to people who cultivate it and the water belongs to people who use it.”

  • 18 December – The battleship TCG Yavuz was sold for scrapping.
