North Carolina was won by incumbent President Harry S. Truman (D–Missouri), running with Senator Alben W. Barkley, with 58.02% of the popular vote, against Governor Thomas Dewey (R–New York), running with Governor Earl Warren, with 32.68% of the popular vote.[3][4] As of the 2016 presidential election, this is the last election in which Cabarrus County voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.[5] This was the worst state for Thurmond of the Confederacy, and 1 of only 2, the other being Texas, in which he did not win at least one county.
As of the 2016 election, this is also the last time the Democratic candidate wins North Carolina by at least 15 points.
