Pe (Persian letter)

Pe (پ) used to represent the phoneme /p/, is a letter in the Perso-Arabic alphabet, based on bā' (ب) with two additional diacritic dots. It is one of the four letters that was created specifically for the Persian alphabet to symbolize sounds found in Persian but not Arabic, others being ژ ,چ and گ.

It is used in Persian, Kurdish, Pashto, Balochi, and other Iranian languages, Uyghur, Urdu, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Kuryan, Shina language, and Turkic languages (before the Latin and Cyrillic scripts were adopted but not in Arabic, which usually replaces it with the letter bāʼ (ب). The letter is called in Egypt, be be-talat noʾaṭ (به بتلات نقط [be beˈtælæt ˈnoʔɑtˤ], "be with three dots").

However, it is one of two additional common foreign letters (the other being ڤ /v/) that are sometimes used in some Arabic dialects to represent foreign sounds, it represents /p/ in loanwords or when writing scientific words and it can be substituted by ب /b/ such as in protein (بروتين or پروتين).
