Zombie Land Saga (Japanese: ゾンビランドサガ, Hepburn: Zonbi Rando Saga) is an anime television series produced by Cygames in collaboration with Avex Pictures, and animated by studio MAPPA.[2] The series began airing in Japan from October 4, 2018.[3]

Plot

In the year 2008, high school girl Sakura Minamoto is abruptly killed in a traffic accident. Ten years later, Sakura, along with six "legendary" girls from various eras of Japan's history, are brought back as zombies by a man named Kotaro Tatsumi, who seeks to save the Saga prefecture by putting together an all-zombie idol group.

Kotaro Tatsumi (巽 幸太郎, Tatsumi Kōtarō)

A manic producer who resurrects Sakura and the other girls as zombies to revitalize the Saga prefecture by forming the idol group Green Face. He is a skilled make-up artist, able to make the zombies look like normal humans during their public appearances.
Sakura Minamoto (源 さくら, Minamoto Sakura) / Zombie 1 (ゾンビィ1号, Zonbii Ichi-gō)
Voiced by: Kaede Hondo[3]
A high school girl and aspiring idol who died in 2008 after being hit by a truck. She is the first of the zombies to regain consciousness after her resurrection, but retains no memories of when she was alive.
Saki Nikaido (二階堂 サキ, Nikaidō Saki) / Zombie 2 (ゾンビィ2号, Zonbii Ni-gō)

A delinquent girl and former biker gang leader who conquered all of Kyushu with her gang, Dorami, during the 1990s.
Ai Mizuno (水野 愛, Mizuno Ai) / Zombie 3 (ゾンビィ3号, Zonbii San-gō)

The lead performer of the 2008 idol group Iron Frill, whom Sakura previously idolized in life.

A soft-spoken idol from the Shōwa period who was popular during the 1980s.

A courtesan who lived between the Bakumatsu and the Meiji Restoration eras in the 19th century.

A prodigious child actress and the youngest member of the group.

Production and release

Cygames announced the series, in collaboration with Avex Pictures, on July 5, 2018.[2] The series will be directed by Munehisa Sakai and written by Shigeru Murakoshi, with animation by studio MAPPA.[4] The series' character designs are provided by Kasumi Fukagawa, Kazuo Ogura is the art director, Takashi Yanagida is serving as director of photography, Azusa Sasaki is the color designer, and Masahiro Goto is editing the series.[4] Yasuharu Takanashi is composing the series' music, which will be produced by Avex Pictures, while dugout is producing the sound.[4] The opening and ending theme songs respectively are "Adabana Necromancy" (徒花ネクロマンシー, Adabana Nekuromanshī, lit. "Fruitless Necromancy") and "Hikari e" (光へ, lit. "To the Light"), both performed by Kaede Hondo, Asami Tano, Risa Taneda, Maki Kawase, Rika Kinugawa, and Minami Tanaka.[4] The 12-episode series began airing on October 4, 2018, and will be broadcast on AT-X, Tokyo MX, Sun TV, BS11, Saga TV, and TVQ.[4][5] The series is being simulcast by Crunchyroll and simuldubbed by Funimation.[6]

Sakura Minamoto, a high school girl with aspirations of becoming an idol, is suddenly hit by a truck. When she wakes up, she finds herself in a zombie-filled mansion in the Saga prefecture, discovering that she has become a zombie herself when she is shot by a frightened police officer. A man named Kotaro Tatsumi explains that he has recruited Sakura, who has been dead for ten years, along with several other zombie girls from various eras to form an idol group and save Saga. Needing stimulation to awaken the other girls from their brain dead state, Kotaro brings everyone to perform at a death metal festival. Despite Sakura's doubts, the girls soon react to the music and make it through the performance through screaming and headbanging alone, during which Sakura recalls some of her memories from when she was alive. Although the performance ultimately ends in disaster, almost all of the other zombies manage to regain their senses the next day.

Displeased with their new predicament, zombies Ai Mizuno and Junko Konno attempt to leave the mansion, prompting a worried Sakura to follow after them. The girls try to evade some rappers trying to hit on them, only to encounter the same policeman from before and run back to the mansion. The next day, the girls find themselves in another performance where they nearly break their masquerade as regular humans when Tae Yamada – the only zombie yet to regain her senses – is accidentally decapitated. As Sakura tries presenting Tae's dismemberment as another part of the act, she initiates a rap battle with rebellious zombie Saki Nikaido, which impresses both Saki and the audience.
