Zaporizhia Arch Bridge (Ukrainian: Арковий міст у Запоріжжі) is the longest arch bridge in Ukraine.[1] The bridge connects right-bank Zaporizhia with Khortytsia island on its north side by crossing the western (smaller) branch of Dnieper.

In 1970 in Zaporizhia began construction of the DniproHES-2 hydro-technical structures. By that time at full pace there moving construction of Khortytskyi District (Zaporizhia) at the right bank near village of Baburky. It was planned to place in operation a new beer factory. All these reasons led to the preparation of technical documentation for construction of a new permanent bridge across the "Old Dnieper" (western branch). The fact is that at some certain stage of the DniproHES-2 construction, it was planned to block a passage along the dam. Thereby a load on existing arch bridges of Preobrazhensky had to be increased and they would not provide a passenger flow at full extend.

There began a construction of a new bridge from a right bank to Khortytsia. The bridge construction was engaged by a collective of "Mostostroi" trust (Mostobud) of the Mintransstroi of the USSR.

A single-arch bridge out of a single storey steel frame. The steel frame was produced by a collective of the Dnipro Steel Frame Factory. The assembly and installation was conducted by the Dnepropetrovskiy mostootryad #12 (construction bridge brigade) led by a precinct chief Zalyubovsky. Already in 1973 there were assembled and installed over 200 tonnes of the steel frame. During the construction for the first time in the practice of Soviet bridge construction was applied a unique 205-meters long prefabricated steel beam which works together with beams of rigidity. Assembly and installation was performed from barges and river banks.

Upon completion of installation, there began testing of the bridge's load bearing structures. Testing was conducted by a staff of the Bridge Dynamics laboratory of the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of Transport Engineers (today part of the Dnipropetrovsk National University of Rail Transport). At first there was tested the bridge span over mid-portion of river and then both of its uttermost trestles. Testing was conducted in six stages. For that purpose there were allocated about 50 dump trucks weighing 25 tonnes each. On the steel frames were installed monitoring devices that were recording load values and deformation of the bridge's elements.
