Zackary Thomas Steffen (born April 2, 1995) is an American soccer player who currently plays as a goalkeeper for Columbus Crew SC in Major League Soccer and the United States men's national soccer team.

College

Steffen played two years of college soccer at the University of Maryland in 2013 and 2014.[1] He left Maryland to join German side SC Freiburg in December 2014.[2]

Professional

Steffen spent time with SC Freiburg II, later becoming Freiburg's third-choice goalkeeper for their first team.[3]

Steffen returned to the United States when he signed with Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew on July 22, 2016.[4] Steffen first went on loan to United Soccer League's Pittsburgh Riverhounds in August 2016.[5] He made his Riverhounds debut August 13, 2016 in a 2–1 victory over Bethlehem Steel FC, making six saves.[6]

Steffen became the Columbus Crew starting goalkeeper for the 2017 MLS season.[7] In the first round of the 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs against Atlanta United FC, he made 8 saves during 120 minutes of regulation and extra time and saved 2 penalties during penalty kick shoot-out to help Columbus Crew advance on penalties.[8]

International

Steffen was the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. under-20 side at the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[9] On June 10, 2015, his notable save on a penalty kick attempted by Jarlan Barrera helped the U.S. to an upset of Colombia in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.[10]

On May 16, 2016, Steffen received his first callup to the United States national team for a camp based in Puerto Rico.[11] Steffen did not make an appearance, but in January 2018, he was called again into camp for a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He made his second appearance for a friendly against Paraguay, playing all 90 minutes. He recorded his first clean sheet, in a 1–0 victory, March 27, 2018, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.[12]
