Luis Argudo (born December 13, 1995) is an American professional soccer player who plays for MLS club Columbus Crew SC as a midfielder.

Youth and college

Born in New York City, Argudo attended Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows, Queens. He was a four-year varsity soccer player for the Patriots, finishing his prep career with 13 goals and 20 assists.[1] Argudo also played club futsal while in high school, turning out for New York Phoenix FC.[2]

Argudo committed to play collegiately at Elon, as part of the last recruiting class for head coach Darren Powell before his resignation.[3] Even under a new head coach in Chris Little, Argudo won playing time. He appeared in 18 matches as a freshman, starting 10 of those. He made his Phoenix debut on August 29, 2014 against Stetson, starting the 3–2, season-opening defeat for Elon.[4] Argudo highlighted his freshman season on October 11, scoring his first collegiate goal as part of a 5–0 rout of Northeastern.[1] He finished the season with a goal and an assist in 18 appearances. As a sophomore, Argudo was part of an Elon team that finished 14–6–1, were CAA co-regular season champions, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for just the fourth time in school history. Argudo tallied two assists in 21 appearances, and started both NCAA Tournament games.[1] Following the season, Argudo transferred from Elon to Wake Forest;[5] he departed with one goal in 39 appearances for the Phoenix.

Although he began his junior season at Wake Forest coming off the bench, Argudo worked his way into the starting lineup midway through the season. He made his Demon Deacons debut in the season opener against Saint Louis, replacing Jacori Hayes for the end of a 1–0 defeat.[6] Argudo started for the first time on September 24 against NC State and tallied his first point, the game-winning assist to Hayes in a 1–0 victory for Wake.[7] In the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, Argudo found the net for the first time at Wake Forest; his breakaway goal helped provide a 2–0 victory over Coastal Carolina.[7] Wake Forest finished the season with a penalty shootout defeat to Stanford in the national championship game; Argudo finished the season with one goal in 25 appearances. As a senior, Argudo found his scoring touch, including a run of five goals in the first four games of the season. Later in the season, Argudo notched a brace and the game-winning goal on September 23 against NC State and scored the game-winner against his former school, Elon, on October 17.[7] In the final of the ACC Tournament championship game, Argudo converted during the penalty shootout as Wake Forest defeated Virginia 4–3 on penalties and defended their conference title.[8] Argudo finished the season with a career-high eight goals in 23 appearances and was named Third Team All-ACC.[9] He ended his two seasons at Wake Forest with nine goals in 48 appearances.

Carolina Dynamo

Ahead of his senior season at Wake Forest, Argudo appeared for Carolina Dynamo of the Premier Development League. He did not take part in the club's U.S. Open Cup run, instead making his debut on May 25, 2017 in a 2–0 defeat against North Carolina FC U23.[10] Argudo found his scoring touch in the back half of the season, with goals on June 17 against Wilmington Hammerheads[11] and July 13 against Tobacco Road FC.[12] He finished the season with two goals in 10 appearances, but the Dynamo finished 10th in the South Atlantic Division and 21 points outside playoff position.

Club career

Columbus Crew SC

Initially, Argudo was not one of the 60 collegiate players selected to participate in the 2018 MLS Combine. However, following an injury to Drew Skundrich that caused him to withdraw, Argudo was added to the Combine roster just two days before it began.[13] He became one of three Demon Deacons at the Combine, alongside Jon Bakero and Ema Twumasi. On January 21, 2018, Argudo was drafted by Columbus Crew SC with the 67th overall pick of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.[14] Argudo officially signed for Columbus on March 1, after taking part in preseason with the team.[15]

Just two days after his signing, Argudo made his debut for Columbus. He replaced Pedro Santos in the 77th minute of a season-opening victory against Toronto FC, the defending MLS Cup champions.[16]

Personal life

Argudo was born in the United States to a Colombian mother and an Ecuadorian father.[17]
