Yxng Dxnzl (A Study of Self Worth), is the eighth project and the fourth studio album by Nigerian rapper MI Abaga.[1] It was released on August 24, 2018 by Chocolate City Music.[2]
Yxng Dxnzl received widespread critical acclaim and topped the charts in Nigeria while reaching number one on iTunes Nigeria and Ghana. The album was supported by a single, You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives.[3]
Production and release
The album which was recorded in May 2017, was initially announced for release in May[4] by MI via an instagram post. Prior to the finishing of this album, MI initially stated that he had finished the album but upon meeting Odunsi, he discarded the entire album and started again.
Musical style
Yxng Dxnzl addresses major life issues like loyalty, self-worth, depression, mental health politics and more.[5]
Artwork and title
In 2017, MI revealed the artwork, designed by Deji Sokunbi and Samuel Adewole via a Twitter post. Adewole had also designed the cover art of his previous album, Rendezvous).
Release and promotion
On July 25, 2018, MI announced via Twitter[6] the release of his album alongside two other albums (label mates Blaqbonez, Loose Kaynon and AQ) which he co-produced.
On August 14, MI released the credits and tracklist[7] for the album via a post on his personal Twitter and Instagram.
Singles
On October 201, 2017, MI released the album lead single "You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives"[8] accompanied by a music video. It became the talk in the Nigerian Hip-hop scene and went on to accrue numerous responses[9] from hip-hop artists in the country including popular OAP N6.[10]
Critical reception
Yxng Dxnzl has received positive reviews. On iTunes, the album received an average score of 95 based on 14 reviews. In a review by Thenet.ng,[11] "the album sees M.I at his barest as a number of tracks found him reevaluating, and reaching for a higher realm of self-love with an understanding that perfection is a journey and not a destination."
