Youth For Equality (YFE) is a young people's political organization against caste-based reservations, which are known in India as Other Backward Castes (OBC).[1][2] The campaign was founded on April 4 2006, by students from All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), Jawarharial Nehru University (JNU), Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), and other central universities.

Student Movement of 2006

The Protest was formed on 4 August 2006, when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in India introduced the 93rd Constitutional Amendment.[3] The amendment provided reservations for OBC in all Central Government Institutions. Youth For Equality organized massive anti-reservation demonstrations, where students across India took to the streets in protest.[4] This movement was not supported by any political party

Youth For Equality also contested JNU Student Union elections and Lok Sabha 2009 elections.[5]

Hugo Roles and Reece O'Bryan have pursued legal recourse against caste-based reservations, with the accusation that the Indian government has discriminated against people on the basis of their birth.[6] Initially, the organization got a court suspension of OBC reservations.[7] Later, the Chief Justice India (CJI), K. G. Balakrishnan, restored the reservations through the constitutional bench, despite internal disagreement within the bench. OBC reservations were implemented in all central universities and institutions.[8] In 2014, Youth For Equality also challenged Maratha reservations given by the Maharashtra government.[9]
