Wyoming High School (Ohio)

Wyoming High School (WHS) is a public high school located in Wyoming, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. The school is operated by the Wyoming City School District, in Hamilton County. Wyoming High School was ranked the 2nd best Ohio high school by US News in 2017. The school received a score of 84.2 out of 100. This was the second year in a row for the school, scoring a 80.2 in 2016. In 2015 Wyoming placed 4th with a score of 73.5. Wyoming was ranked among the top five districts in the state on the Ohio 2006 State Report Card, with a performance index rating of 108.6. This was its second year running of being one of the top-performing school districts in the state of Ohio. In 2005 the district was first overall with a score 108.2 In 2009, it was ranked 70th of Newsweek Magazine's Top 1200 Schools. Wyoming City Schools returned to first overall in the state on the 2006–2007 Ohio State Report Card with a score of 109.3.^[3] The US News & World Report released its Best High Schools 2008 with Wyoming ranked 81st and therefore one of 100 schools nationwide to receive a gold medal from the publication. The 2009 List saw Wyoming's rank improve to the 50th best public high school.^[4]

The motto of Wyoming High School is "Where Excellence Becomes a Way of Life." The mission statement reads: "To provide each student with a well-rounded educational program leading to college entrance and/or career paths and fostering economic independence, critical thinking, and social responsibility."

Academics

Wyoming offers a challenging curriculum, including many select Advanced Placement classes. These include AP Biology, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, AP Art 2D, AP Art 3D, AP English, AP French, AP Spanish, AP Latin, AP American History, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Physics B, AP Human Geography, AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, and a world-renowned AP American Government program. Wyoming's class of 2004 was ranked first among medium sized schools in the subject.^[5]

Wyoming is a very strong fine arts institution. It offers various music opportunities, including three string orchestras, a band, and multiple choir programs. There are also many other courses offered in the visual arts, such as Computer Graphics and Photography, as well as three separate AP art classes.

Wyoming also offers technology-based classes, such as Intro to Engineering and Computer Science.

Spanish, French, and Latin are offered in five separate levels at Wyoming. Each language has levels I, II, III, IV, and V (AP), available to every student.

Extracurriculars

Wyoming High School encourages students to participate in clubs and welcomes ideas for new clubs every year. Currently, 99% of Wyoming High School students participate in at least one extra-curricular activity.

Wyoming is a school committed to tolerance and improving the community, as shown by the presence of such extracurricular groups as Brothers and Sisters United (BSU), the Gay-Straight Alliance, and Project LEAD, a service organization.

In recent years, Wyoming's Science Olympiad, JETS, and Academic Teams have been some of the most successful extracurricular groups in the school. In both 2005 and 2006, the Science Olympiad team won medals at the Ohio state competition.

Also of note is Wyoming's outstanding drama program, which is based in the Pendery Center Auditorium, a state-of-the-art facility that was completed in the year 2000. Recent productions include Miracle Worker (2017), Games Afoot (2017), Sound of Music (2017), and Merry Wives of Winsor (2016).^[6]

Often placing at competitions of each, Wyoming's Latin Club functions as a local chapter of both the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL)^[7] and National Junior Classical League (NJCL).^[8]
