World Emoji Day

World Emoji Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated on July 17.[1][2] The day is deemed a "global celebration of emoji"[3] and is celebrated with emoji events and product releases.[4] Celebrated annually since 2014,[5] NBC reported that the day was Twitter's top trending item on July 17 in 2015.[6]

Origins

World Emoji Day is "the brainchild of Jeremy Burge"[7] according to CNBC who stated that "London-based founder of Emojipedia created it" in 2014.[8]

The New York Times reported that Burge created this on July 17 "based on the way the calendar emoji is shown on iPhones".[9] For the first World Emoji Day, Burge told The Independent "there were no formal plans put in place"[10] other than choosing the date. The Washington Post suggested in 2018 that readers use this day to "communicate with only emoji."[11]

Google changed the appearance of Unicode character U+1F4C5 📅 CALENDAR[12] in 2016 to display July 17 on Android, Gmail and Hangouts products.[13]

Announcements

On World Emoji Day 2015, Pepsi launched PepsiMoji which included an emoji keyboard and custom World Emoji Day Pepsi cans and bottles.[14] These were originally released in Canada, and expanded to 100 markets in 2016.[15].

In 2016, Sony Pictures Animation used World Emoji Day to announce T. J. Miller as the first cast member for The Emoji Movie,[16] Google released “a series of new emoji that are more inclusive of women from diverse backgrounds”[17] and Emojipedia launched the first World Emoji Awards.[18] Other World Emoji Day announcements in 2016 came from Disney,[19] General Electric, Twitter, and Coca-Cola.[20][21]

In 2017, Apple used World Emoji Day to announce its new emojis on iOS,[22][23] London's Royal Opera House presented 20 operas and ballets in emoji form,[24] Google announced the end of its “blob emojis”[25] and winners of the World Emoji Awards[26] were announced[27] from the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange and broadcast on Cheddar.[28]

Kim Kardashian told the Hollywood Reporter that “three new Kimoji fragrances” based on her emoji product line are to be released on World Emoji Day 2018.[29]

As mentioned above Kim Kardashian did indeed release her Kimoji fragrance line on World Emoji Day 2018. With emoji like shapes and her own coined named Kimoji there are no surprises she timed this up perfectly to celebrate both World Emoji Day and the release of her new fragrance line. [30]

Events

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Andrew Rannells and Olivia Palermo attended the Pepsi World Emoji Day Red Carpet event in 2016.[31][32] In 2017 Paula Abdul, Maya Rudolph, Liam Aiken, Jeremy Burge and Fern Mallis at the Saks Fifth Avenue red carpet on World Emoji Day.[33][34]

The Empire State Building was lit in "emoji yellow" for World Emoji Day in 2017[35][24] and the New York Stock Exchange Closing Bell was rung by Jake T. Austin of The Emoji Movie and Jeremy Burge from Emojipedia.[36] A Guinness World Record was attempted in Dubai on World Emoji Day in 2017 for the "largest gathering of people dressed as emojis".[37]

The Irish Examiner reported a new musical Emojiland will premiere off-broadway in New York City on World Emoji Day 2018 as part of the New York Musical Festival.[38]

In 2016 Twitter noted that Australia's "emoji-loving" Foreign Minister Julie Bishop[39] shares her birthday with World Emoji Day.[40][41][42]

In 2017 US House Speaker Paul Ryan released a video on World Emoji Day claiming he “goes crazy on emojis”[43] which was widely criticized.[44][45]

AdWeek released an article of all the crazy and unique ways people around the world are celebrating World Emoji Day in 2018. From the U.S. Army to Nissan Middle East, everyone wants to prove they are celebrating too. [46]

In 2018, Apple decided to celebrate World Emoji Day big. Apple released over 70 new emojis on July 17, 2018. From new animals to new characters Apple is attempting to include just about everyone. [47]
