Westmorland General Hospital is a hospital near Oxenholme in Kendal, Cumbria. It is part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust and is the base of which the trust is headquartered. [2]

Rating

The most recent inspection of WGH from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) took place in October 2016, with the report being published in February 2017.

The outcome of this inspection was that the Trust is rate as GOOD overall, with an overall rating of OUTSTANDING for caring. Westmorland General Hospital was rated GOOD overall.

Notable events

  • A major £19 million investment in estates across University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust was announced in July 2018, with a number of plans to improve Westmorland General Hospital. Most notably, a new Audiology booth and improvements to the Theatres will take place at this hospital site.
  • On the 1 April 2018 the aspiration of providing integrated care across Morecambe Bay took a step closer when more than 500 staff working in community services in south Cumbria joined University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT).The staff formerly worked for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) Among the benefits anticipated will be consistent community care across Morecambe Bay. Reduced duplication for our patients and a better admission and discharge procedures
  • The Morecambe Bay Cardiac Centre at Westmorland General Hospital (WGH), which welcomes in excess of 1,000 patients every year, was officially opened on Friday 18 August following an investment of more than £1m from University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT).The investment included new specialised cardio-vascular imaging equipment and a full refurbishment of the Cardiac Catheter Lab Theatre Suite.
  • On Thursday 6 July 2017 the Trust celebrated the 25th anniversary of the official opening of Westmorland General Hospital and 25 yrars since Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal officially opened the hospital. The anniversary celebrations included a display of old photos and memorabilia in the Westmorland Bite Restaurant for all staff, patients, public, volunteers and partners to view and reminisce.

Hospital Radio

Bay Radio (Formally Bay Trust Radio) is the in-house hospital radio station at Westmorland General Hospital which promotes good health and wellbeing across Lancashire and Cumbria. The radio station is run by volunteers.
