West Lincoln High School (WLHS) is located in Lincoln County, North Carolina, outside Lincolnton, North Carolina. West Lincoln is a comprehensive four-year high school recognized as a School of Distinction and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. WLHS provides for student development through varied curricula, including Advanced Placement (AP) and honors courses. All students may participate in any program of study regardless of sex, race, religion, national origin, age or handicap. Lincoln County high schools utilize block scheduling. Students are enrolled in four 90-minute classes each semester. The academic year, which begins around August 25 and ends around the second week of June, is divided equally into two semesters and four grading periods.

Career-technical education

Career-technical education, a priority of the Lincoln County Board of Education, is provided at the high school and the Lincoln County School of Technology. LCST, a unique centralized educational center, serves as an extension of the four county high schools. Students attend daily 90-minute classes during the 11th and 12th grades. Career-technical students may participate in apprenticeships, career internships, and earn college credits through articulation agreements with local institutions of higher learning. The Lincoln County Job-Ready System of career majors helps students relate academics to the real world and develop realistic, rewarding career goals.

Spirit Week

West Lincoln hosts several events every year. Spirit Week is one of the most anticipated events of the school year. Spirit Week is held in the week of the homecoming football game. Every day has a different theme and the students are allowed to dress up for the day. There is always a pajama day, and at the end of the week, the day of the big game, is called "Rowdy Rebel" day. On Rowdy Rebel day, students wear their homecoming shirts and their best pair of overalls. On the morning of Rowdy Rebel day, West Lincoln hosts a "Tractor Parade". Students will sign up and drive their tractors to school. The parade is followed by a pep rally to celebrate homecoming.

Clubs

There are several clubs at West Lincoln, including Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), BETA, NTHS, Art, Chamber Choir, Science, Quizbowl, National Honor Society, and the Magic The Gathering Club MTGC . The clubs host special events such as Prom Promise week (SADD) and Operation Christmas Child (HOSA). The clubs also host fundraisers for themselves and local charities throughout the school year. They sell candy grams during the holidays, host carnivals for children, And hold tournaments for students to win rewards.

Sports

West Lincoln has nineteen different sports including American football, baseball, men's and women's basketball, softball, wrestling, men's and women's tennis, men's soccer and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country and volleyball. All of these, with the exception of tennis, track, soccer and golf, have junior varsity and varsity teams.

Wrestling

The most notable sport at West Lincoln is the wrestling team. In the 2000 season, West Lincoln won the 2-A Dual Team State Championship posting a 31-1 overall record. The wrestling team was also Individual State Tournament runner-up in 2005. It has also won the conference championship every year but once since Butch Ross took over in the 1996-1997 season. In the month of February 2015, the West Lincoln wrestlers traveled to Croatan High School to win another 2-A Dual Team State Championship title. They posted a score of 49-19. West Lincoln consecutively won four matches. Their toughest competition was against Newton Conover High School. West Lincoln wrestlers, Zane Peterson Robbie Hallman, and Hunter Carpenter helped the rebels in this particular match. Zane Peterson was the first pin for the rebels and Robbie Hallman's pin lengthened the gap but Hunter Carpenter's pin in the 2nd period gave the rebels their win. During this championship, Mack George, a former senior of West Lincoln High School, was named the championship's most valuable performer after pinning a 220-pound opponent in a record-breaking time of one minute and forty-nine seconds. The 2-A Dual Team Championship title of 2015 is the 2nd title that the West Lincoln wrestling team has received.

Football

2005

In 2005, West Lincoln High School Football reached the playoffs for the first time in school history.[1] They lost in the first round of the playoffs to East Rutherford 50-6.[2] The team was coached by Randall Gusler.[1]

2006

In 2006, West Lincoln Football Rebels made it to the playoffs again, this time under Head Coach Mark Hoover.[3] The Rebel team played Shelby High School, and suffered a loss of 41-22.

2009

In 2009, under the direction of Head Coach Mark Lathem the Rebels fell one game short of qualifying for the playoffs.[4]

2010

Under the direction of Head Coach Tom Sain, the Rebels showed life again in the playoffs for the first time since 2006.[5] The Rebels fell 35-27 to Wilkes Central.[6] West Lincoln's Junior Varsity team went a perfect 9-0, which is to be believed the first time in school history.[7]

Tennis

The men's tennis team won the Conference Championship in 2008 for the first time in seventeen years.

Golf

The men's golf team won their first ever conference championship in 2016. Team members include Will Carpenter, Bauer Galloway, Cade McConell, Jeffrey Phillips, Dalton Adams and Jack Willis.

Notable alumni

Jonathan Cline led the Rebels to the 2000 Wrestling State Championship (first team state championship in school's athletic history), wrestled in three total state championship matches, graduated 3rd in class rank in 2001 (based on weighted GPA)
