Warneford Hospital, Leamington Spa

Warneford Hospital was an institution which served as the main hospital for the town of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire between its opening in 1832[1] and its closure in 1993.[2] The hospital was named after Samuel Warneford, a philanthropist who donated £3,000 of the £4,000 needed to build the hospital.[3] Until 1948 when it was taken over by the National Health Service treatment was funded either by the patients themselves, by wealthy individual donors or by collections made from the general public. The maternity unit, the Cay Block,[4] was opened in 1939 and named after Mrs Annie Cay who collected donations and fundraised for it and it became the main birthplace for local babies. The still extant hospital radio station Radio Warneford first broadcast in 1973.[5] In 1993 when the hospital closed and all services were transferred to either Warwick Hospital or Wallsgrave Hospital (now University Hospital Coventry). Nothing remains of the buildings and the site is partly covered by housing.
