Wilāyat Wādī Banī Khālid (Arabic: وِلَايَـة وَادِي بَـنِي خَـالِـد‎)[3][5] is a Wilāyah (Arabic: وِلَايَـة‎, Province)[4][6] in the Northern Governorate of the Eastern Region of Oman.[1][7] Located about 126 mi (203 km) from Muscat,[8] and 120 km (75 mi) from Sur,[7] the province has a wadi which serves as a destination for tourists, that is Wādī Banī Khālid (Arabic: وَادِي بَـنِي خَـالِـد‎).[1][2]

The Wadi

Wadi Bani Khalid is one of the best-known wadis in the great country of the Sultanate of Oman.[9] Its stream maintains a constant flow of water throughout the year. Large pools of water and boulders are scattered along the course of the wadi. As a geographical area, the wadi covers a large swathe of lowland and the Hajar Mountains.[10]

Kuhūf (Arabic: كُـهُـوْف‎, caves; singular: Kahf (Arabic: كَـهْـف‎) form some of the features of this wadi. These include Kahf Maqal[11] (Arabic: كَـهْـف مَـقَـل‎),[12][13] which was described as an "underground chamber" of the Sultanate of Oman,[14][15] or the akthar (Arabic: أَكْـثَـر‎, 'best') out of 4000 caves.[16][17] Aflâj (Arabic: أَفْـلَاج‎, underground canals; singular: Falaj (Arabic: فَـلَـج‎)[18] or ‘Uyûn (Arabic: عُـيُـوْن‎, springs of water; singular: ‘Ayn (Arabic: عَـيْـن‎)[19] are also common in this wadi, including ‘Ain Ḥamûdah (Arabic: عَـيْـن حَـمُـوْدَة‎),[3] ‘Ain aṣ-Ṣārūj (Arabic: عَـيْـن الـصَّـارُوْج‎) and ‘Ain Dawwah (Arabic: عَـيْـن دَوَّه‎).[5]

Villages or towns

The village of Bada‘ (Arabic: بضعه‎)[20] is a well-known stop for tourists in the valley.[15][21] Bidiyyah is approximately 40 km (25 mi) by road.[22][23][24]
