The Visonta Coal Mine is an open pit lignite mine located near Gyöngyös, Heves County. It is the smallest lignite mine in Hungary out of three lignite mines in total. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 2.15 billion tonnes of lignite, one of the largest coal reserves in Europe and the world and has an annual production of 3.9 million tonnes of coal.[1]

Mainly East-German endless-chain dredgers and conveyor belts are used in the Visonta mine, the lignite serves as fuel for the nearby Mátra Power Plant. The mining depth is between 80 and 120 m.[2] Due to several thin lignite zones, the lignite-waste-heap ratio is 1:9.[3]
