Venugopal Dhoot

Venugopal Dhoot (born in Mumbai, India) is an Indian businessman. According to Forbes magazine, his wealth in 2015 was $1.19 billion, the 61st richest person in India.[1] He is the founder, chairman and managing director of Videocon.[2]

He is an alumnus of the College of Engineering, Pune, India.

Career

His father, Nandlal Madhavlal Dhoot, was an industrialist who made his earlier fortune in the sugarcane and cotton industry. Nandlal Dhoot was the founder of Videocon Corporation and other businesses ventures such as Videocon Electronics. The company's major breakthrough came when it received one of India's first licenses to manufacture colour televisions.

Personal life

Venugopal Dhoot is an avid cricket fan and accomplished flautist. The Videocon School of Cricket launched in Kolkata, India under the guidance of former Indian Cricket Captain, Saurav Ganguly, trains and promotes young cricketers of India in the age group of 10 to 17. Venugopal Dhoot is also an environmental enthusiast who is credited for completing a project for planting 2,000,000 teak trees across India. His brother, Rajkumar Dhoot, is a member of the Indian Parliament. He is a vegetarian for spiritual reasons.[3]

He is married to Rama Dhoot and has two children, Anirudh and Surbhi.

Controversies

In April 2018, authorities have issued a look out circular (LOC) for Dhoot, Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar.[4] The LOC was issued due to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigations into irregularities concerning a 3,250 crore (US$450 million) loan made from ICICI Bank to Videocon Group[5] and the use of shell companies and a quid pro quo arrangement in the case of a 64 crore (US$8.9 million) loan by Dhoot of Videocon to NuPower Renewables,[6] a company which is owned by Deepak Kochhar.[4]
