Uppum Mulakum is a Malayalam sitcom broadcast on Flowers TV. The show premiered on 14 December 2015.[1]

The sitcom depicts events in the life of Balachandran Thampi, his wife Neelima, and their five children . The series features Biju Sopanam, Nisha Sarangh, Rishi S Kumar, Juhi Rustagi, Al Sabith and Shivani Menon in the lead roles.[2]

Plot summary

The sitcom revolves around the family of Balachandran Thampi (Balu); who is self-employed as an electronics technician, his wife Neelima (Neelu); who works as an accountant in a private firm, and their five children- Vishnu, Lakshmi (Lechu), Keshav (Keshu), Shivani (Shiva) and Parvathy (Parukutty).

They are occasionally visited by Balu's brother Surendran, his parents, his cousin Rema and her father Shankaran, Neelima's parents Kuttan Pillai and Bhavani Amma, her brother Sreekuttan, their neighbours Bhasi, Nawas and auto driver Chandran.

Vishnu is a new-generation, lively dancer who is often teased by his siblings for failing in his B.Sc examinations. He is Neelu's favourite kid. He has a dance group. His hairstyle makes him a popular character. He even takes care of his baby sister, when no one is home.

Lakshmi is a lazy, beauty conscious and the eldest daughter of the family. She loves to tease her younger siblings. She loves poems and singing. She is always seen chatting with her friends.

Keshu and Shiva are the school-going kids of the house. Keshu is a foodie while Shiva doesn't enjoy eating. Both are naughty and share an unbreakable bond with each other. They make naughty plans together and always Lachu gets threatened by them. All of them love each other even though they keep fighting all day. Keshu's crush is Aleena Francis, Shiva's classmate and enemy.

Controversy

In July 2018, actress Nisha Sarangh claimed in an interview that the show's director R Unnikrishnan had maltreated her, and stated that she would leave the show unless the director was replaced. She was supported by the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) and the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A.), as well as by individual actors. [3] After the issue, Unnikrishnan was removed and the associate director took in charge of the direction.
