The University of Washington College of Engineering (CoE) is the engineering unit of the university. In autumn 2017, the CoE had an enrollment of 8,125 students.[2]

History

The College of Engineering was established in 1901 after the University of Washington's Board of Regents hired and appointed Almon H. Fuller as professor of Civil and Mechanical Engineering three years earlier.

Faculty and students of the CoE have included 11 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 17 Sloan Foundation Research Award recipients, and a MacArthur Foundation Fellow in 2007.[3]

In Fall 2017, the College began a "Direct to College" admission process by which prospective freshman can apply directly to the College to be assured a place. Accepted students must still meet minimum progress requirements to enter a major. The process was created in response to the growing competition at the CoE, where fewer than half of undergraduates who apply to major in engineering are accepted.[4]
