Twin Star Exorcists (双星の陰陽師, Sōsei no Onmyōji) is a Japanese shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Yoshiaki Sukeno about a pair of young and talented exorcists that according to a prophecy, are destined to marry and have a child that will be the ultimate exorcist. The series is published in Japan by Shueisha in its Jump Square magazine, and is published in English by Viz Media. An anime television adaptation by Pierrot ran between April 6, 2016 to March 29, 2017.

Plot

Rokuro Enmado is a young boy who used to be a powerful aspiring exorcist, before a tragic incident left his friends dead and made him abandon the profession. One day, he has a fateful encounter with Benio Adashino, a girl around his age and a well known exorcist from the east. According to prophecy, Rokuro and Benio are the "Twin Star Exorcists", and are destined to marry and have a child known as the Miko, which will be the ultimate exorcist, capable of cleansing all evil spirits, or Kegare, from the world and ending the war that has lasted over a millennium.

Media

Anime

An anime television adaptation was announced on the January 2016 cover of Jump Square on December 4, 2015.[5] The series is directed by Tomohisa Taguchi and written by Naruhisa Arakawa,[6] with animation by Studio Pierrot.[7] Additionally, Shishō Igarashi is serving as assistant director, Kikuko Sadakata is designing the characters, and Itsuko Takeda is serving as chief animation director.[6] The series' first opening theme song is "Valkyrie -Ikusa Otome-" (Valkyrie -戦乙女-, lit. "Valkyrie -War Maiden-") by Wagakki Band,[8] while the first ending theme is "Eyes" (アイズ, Aizu) by Hitomi Kaji.[9] The second opening theme, "Re:Call", is performed by the idol group i☆Ris,[10][11][12] while the second ending theme, "Yadori-boshi" (宿り星) is performed by the two-man group Itowokashi (Kashitarō Itō and Ryō Miyada).[13] The third opening theme, "sync" is performed by lol, while the third ending theme "Hide & Seek" is performed by Girlfriend.[14] The fourth opening theme, "Kanadeai" is performed by Itowokoashi, while the fourth ending theme "Hotarubi" is performed by Wagakki Band. [15]

The series began airing on April 6, 2016 on TV Tokyo and other TX Network stations,[16][17] and later on AT-X.[18] Animax Asia aired the series with English Subtitles. Crunchyroll is simulcasting the series worldwide outside of Asia,[19] and will also release the series on Blu-ray and DVD with an English dub, and Part 1 will be released July 24, 2018.[20] Chinese streaming site iQiyi has listed the series with fifty episodes.[21]

The anime is licensed in North America by Crunchyroll (with home video distribution from Funimation) and in the UK by Anime Limited.[22][23]

Manga

Yoshiaki Sukeno began serializing the manga in Shueisha's Jump Square magazine on October 4, 2013.[24] A special chapter was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump in April 2016.[25]

Viz Media licensed the series for publication in North America, publishing the first volume in July 2015.[26][27]

Video game

A video game adaptation of the series from Bandai Namco Entertainment was announced on September 3, 2016.[58] The battle adventure game will be released for PlayStation Vita, and will feature Rokuro as a playable character.[58] It will feature an alternate setup with five different girls as candidates for the title of Twin Star, including Benio, Mayura, and three other characters designed exclusively for the game by original creator Yoshiaki Sukeno. The game was released to Japan on January 26, 2017.[4]

Reception

Volume 1 reached 11th place on the weekly Oricon manga charts, with 29,527 copies sold;[59] volume 2 reached 23rd place, with 30,734 copies;[60] volume 3 reached 46th place, with 38,835 copies;[61] volume 4 reached 24th place, with 37,900 copies;[62] volume 5 also reached 24th place, with 47,489 copies;[63] volume 6 reached 32nd place, with 48,029 copies;[64] volume 7 reached 20th place, with 48,762 copies;[65] and volume 8 reached 11th place, with 56,947 copies.[66]

Volume 3 of the English translation appeared on the New York Times Manga Best Sellers list for two nonconsecutive weeks, first at 8th place and then at 6th.[67][68]
