Tro sau thom

An unnamed tro type instument. Possibilities include the tro sau toch (small tro), tro sau thom (big tro), or the tro che.

The tro sau thom or tro sau (Khmer: ទ្រសោធំ) is a bowed stringed instrument from Cambodia. It is the larger tro sau instrument; thom means "big" in Khmer. The sound box (a cylinder) can measure 90mm by 120mm. The neck can measure 620mm long. It is made from black wood but more basic materials were used, such as a hollow bamboo and a tortoise shell. It is used in Cambodian classical music.

It is a bowed instrument with a difference from many; rather than run the bow across the strings from the outside, one of the instrument's strings passes inside the bow's hair, between wood and hair.[1] The result is that the bow and strings are intertwined. The bow presses down on one string to play it and pulls upward on the other string to play that one.
