TourRadar is a travel website where travellers and tourists can book multi-day group tours as well read user-generated reviews of individual tours and of the Tour Operators. It claims to have more than 25,000 tours available from more than 250 different tour operators worldwide,[1] and acts as an online marketplace for third party tour operators to list their tours so that users can find them.

History

Founded in 2010, the website was created by Australian brothers Shawn and Travis Pittman,[2] and was inspired by their social travel website BugBitten.[3] TourRadar has since grown to include reviews,[4] an online travel blog called Days to Come,[5] and annual awards titled ‘Guide of the Year’ and 'Tour of the Year'.[6] In 2017 TourRadar also launched a special award category called 'Adventure Guide of the Year' to support the Adventure Travel and Trade Association.[7]

TourRadar launched into North America in September 2015 with Christian Wolters, former VP of Sales and Marketing at Intrepid Travel, as the North America Managing Director.[8]

In September 2016 TourRadar announced that it would be adding river cruising to its catalogue of bookable tours.[9]

In 2017, TourRadar was named one of the top 3 start-ups in Austria by Trend Magazine.[10] In the same year they also made the Travolution Awards Shortlist in the following categories:[11]

  • Best for Experiences
  • Best Travel Blog
  • Best Use of Search Engine Marketing

In May 2014, TourRadar appeared on Austria's version of Dragons' Den, "2 Minuten, 2 Millionen" (2 Minutes, 2 Million),[15] and secured $500,000 USD in funding led by former chief executives from Expedia and HolidayCheck, as well as funding from SpeedInvest, an Austrian Investment Company.[16]

In October 2017, TourRadar announced that they had completed a Series B funding round.[17] In total, an additional $10,000,000 USD was raised to expand the company's technology and product departments.[18]

In June 2018, TourRadar announced their Series C funding round [19] where they raised a reported $50,000,000 USD in funding [20] to be used to further expand their team. This round of funding was led by the Silicon Valley growth VC firm TCV,[21] with participation from existing investors Cherry Ventures, Endeit Capital, Hoxton Ventures and Speedinvest. TCV previously backed Expedia and Airbnb.[22]
