Thomas J. Lynch (born 31 October 1992) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously played 131 games and kicked a then club-record 254 goals at the Gold Coast Suns after being drafted by the club with the 11th overall pick in the 2010 national draft. He served as Gold Coast's co-captain in 2017 and 2018 before joining Richmond as a free agent at the end of the 2018 season.

Early life and junior football

Lynch grew up in the small town of Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, and played for the local Sorrento Football Club in the Nepean Football League in the junior levels.

Lynch played for the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup in the 2010 season, having been unable to break into the side in 2009.[1] Lynch also played five games for the Victorian Country side in 2010, kicking eight goals.[1]

AFL career

Gold Coast (2011–2018)

Lynch was drafted to the Gold Coast Football Club with the 11th selection in the 2010 AFL Draft.[2][3]

Lynch played his first AFL game for the Gold Coast in round 7, 2011 against the Brisbane Lions. Playing in the forward line as well as in the ruck, he amassed 17 possessions and kicked two goals as the Gold Coast went on to win the game by eight points.[4] Lynch continued the first half of the season in strong form, averaging nearly two goals a game, kicking three goals twice.[5]

In the 2015 season, Lynch won the Gold Coast leading goalkicker and also won the Gold Coast Suns Club Champion.

After 7 rounds of the 2016 season Lynch had recorded the third most votes (36) in the AFLCA champion player of the year award behind Patrick Dangerfield (39) and Joel Selwood (39).[6] At season's end he won his second successive Gold Coast Suns Club Championship[7] and he was the Gold Coast leading goalkicker for the third time. He was also named in the All-Australian side in the forward pocket.[8]

On 8 December 2016, Lynch was appointed co-captain of the Suns, along with Steven May. On 24 May 2017, it was announced that he would wear number 50 on his jersey, rather than his usual 19, for the round 10 Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round game against Melbourne. This was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum which recognised Indigenous Australians in the census.[9]

Lynch played in the Suns first six matches of the 2018 season before a knee injury forced him to miss in round 7. He was expected to miss four weeks of football as a result.[10]

Lynch is contracted to the Suns through the end of the 2018 season and will become a restricted free agent at the end of that deal.[11] In August of that year he informed the Gold Coast Suns of his intention to explore his options as a restricted free agent at the end of the season.[12][13] He was subsequently stripped of his captaincy by the club and was stood down from all duties with the club other than his continuing knee injury rehabilitation.[13] He announced he would be joining Richmond as a free agent in the lead up to the 2018 free agency period.[14] At that time he held the club records for goals, behinds, marks and goal assists while placing second behind only Jarrod Harbrow for most games played.[15]

Richmond (2019–present)

Lynch officially joined Richmond on 8 October.[16]

Personal life

Tom's younger sister Bethany is also a footballer, having resumed playing in 2018 with the Richmond Football Club in the VFL Women's competition.[18]
