Thiagarajar College is a college located in Madurai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Started on 7 July 1949, the college was formally declared open by the Maharaja of Bhavnagar, the then Governor of Madras, on 12 October 1949.[1]
History
The college was established in 1949 by Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, a 20th-century South Indian philanthropist. Its mission is to provide quality higher education to the rural masses to realize the vision of Mahatma Gandhi. The college is located 4 km south-east of the Temple of Goddess Meenakshi, and has Vaigai to its north and Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam to its south.
The college offered 4 degree programs in 1949, which has now expanded to 38, including 4 certified and 3 diploma courses. The college also has a research center (established in 1978). The college has been autonomous since 1987 and became fully co-ed since 1998.
Faculty
The college is managed by the Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar Memorial Trust. It is a Government-aided institution affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University. Karumuttu T. Kannan, Dr. Mrs. Uma Kannan and Hari. K. Thiagarajan serve as college president, Vice President and secretary respectively.

The college currently provides 9 PHD, 11 Mphil, 15 Post graduate, 24 under graduate, 11 Diploma and 13 certificate programs.
Hostel
There are two separate hostels one for men Hostel for Men (Valluvar Illam) and another for women Hostel for Women (Manimegalai Illam)
