The Theology Institute of Azerbaijan under the subordination of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Respublikasının Dini Qurumlarla İş üzrə Dövlət Komitəsinin tabeliyində Azərbaycan İlahiyyat İnstitutu) — is a higher education institution specializing in theology in Azerbaijan. The rector of the University is Jeyhun Mammadov.[1] At present, there are three departments and one faculty in the institution. Education in the Institute is carried out in Azerbaijani language. However, it is planned to be held in Russian, English and Arabic languages and to attract students from different countries around the world in the future.[2]

History

To establish Institute of Theology was decided under the subordination of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 9 February 2018. [3] To ensure inclusion of the faculty of Theology of the Baku State University into the structure of the Institute of Theology was entrusted to the Ministry of Education of the Republic by the same decree.

The opening ceremony of the Azerbaijan Institute of Theology took place on September 17, 2018. The head of the Department of Interethnic Relations, Multiculturalism and Religious Affairs of the Presidential Administration Etibar Najafov, Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Mubariz Gurbanli, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Associations and Religious Organizations Siyavush Novruzov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Istanbul 29 Mayıs University Tayyar Altikulac, heads of religious communities functioning in Azerbaijan and other responsible persons participated in the event. The Institute has announced a contest on 26 July 2018 to organize its corporate logo. For this purpose, a commission was created by consisting of the Director of the Public Relations Department of the State Committee for Religious Organizations Yagut Aliyeva, the People's Artist of Azerbaijan Eldar Mikayilzade, the scientific worker of the Institute of Manuscripts named after M.Fuzuli Zaur Orujov and the teacher of the Azerbaijan Institute of theology Kevser Tagiyev. 106 different logos were presented at the contest. On August 8, the meeting was held at the Institute of Theology in connection with the contest. Logo samples were presented to the members of the commission and discussions were carried out. Following the evaluation of the parameters, Konul Mammadzadeh's logo was chosen as the winner of the contest and she was awarded by the Azerbaijan Institute of Theology.[4]

According to the unanimous opinion of members of the commission, example of  Mammadzadeh reflected the purpose and mission of the Institute of Theology. Thus, the "human" symbol whose hand turned toward the sky in the center of the logos reflecting multiculturalism and tolerance communicates with God, the “book” - the main source of knowledge, and the "olive branch" expresses peace and spirituality.[4]

Purpose

The purpose of the institute is to ensure the preservation and development of the religious and spiritual environment, based on the historical traditions of the Azerbaijani peopl, and preparation of highly skilled staff in the field of organization of religious activities. Philosophy, sociology, psychology, multiculturalism, informatics and other social, humanitarian sciences will be taught to the student at the institute along with the religious sciences. 35 places for Islamic studies and 25 places for Religious studies were approved by state order for the academic year 2018-2019.[2]

A scholarship named after Heydar Aliyev for one student of the Theology Institute of Azerbaijan has been established by State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Caucasian Muslims Office has also allocated a monthly scholarship to one of the students. [2]

Administation

Jeyhun Mammadov was appointed as the rector of the institute by the decree of President of Republic dated May 31, 2018. [5] The first Prorector of the Institute of Theology was appointed on September 13, 2018. The professor Mubariz Jamalov has been appointed Prorector on educational work, PhD in Theology Agil Shirinov has been appointed Prorector for Science and Innovation by the order of the Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Associations, Mubariz Gurbanli.
