The Golf Club is a golf simulation video game developed by HB Studios for PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows and Xbox One on the Unity game engine. It is a golf sim targeting the social features of the next generation of consoles and boasting a powerful Course Creator based on the procedural generation of courses. The Course Creator can generate a brand new course in seconds which can be shared and played immediately online with friends and other gamers across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. There are also full editing capabilities for courses, Tournaments and Tours.[1] A sequel was announced, The Golf Club 2, which is set to release in Spring 2017.

History

The Golf Club was conceived in Q1/Q2 2013[2] after the cancellation of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15 on which HB Studios were due to work.[3] The team's philosophy is focused on delivering an accessible, high quality, social and customizable golf experience with minimal to zero loading times.[4]

In early February 2014, HB Studios announced that The Golf Club would be appearing on Steam[5] and they used that platform when The Golf Club entered Closed BETA later in the month.[6]

On August 12, HB Studios announced that 'The Golf Club' would be released on August 19 for Windows PC and Xbox One, while PlayStation 4 was still pending certification approval.[7] It was released at the end of August.

At the 2014 National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers (NAVGTR) Awards The Golf Club was nominated for the category "Game, Original Sports".[8] In January 2015, in its end of year awards, the Operation Sports gaming website awarded the game three gold medals including Best Indie/Arcade Game of 2014.[9] At the 2017 NAVGTR Awards, the VR version was nominated for "Game, Original Sports".[10][11]
