The Cry is a four-part British television mystery drama series, written by Jacquelin Perske and adapted from the novel of the same name by Helen FitzGerald, that first began broadcasting on BBC One on 30 September 2018. The series stars Jenna Coleman as Joanna Lindsay, a schoolteacher whose four-month old baby Noah disappears whilst she and her husband Alastair (Ewen Leslie) are visiting family in Australia. The series was directed by Glendyn Ivin and produced by Synchronicity Films.
Synopsis
Joanna and Alistair are young parents who travel from Scotland to a town in Australia, to visit family and fight for custody of the husband's daughter, Chloe, against his Australian ex-wife, Alexandra. On the drive from Melbourne to Geelong, their baby son Noah goes missing on a lonely roadside.[1] In the aftermath of the tragedy, under public scrutiny, their marriage collapses and her psychological state disintegrates.[2]

During a shrink, schoolteacher Joanna Lindsay begins to recount her life as a troubled parent and wife via flashbacks. In one of these flashbacks, her Australian husband, Alistair, receives word that is ex-wife is preparing a custody battle over his teenage daughter Chloe. Reluctantly, Joanna decides to come with him as well as bringing their infant son Noah. While on a route flight to Australia, Joanna lashes out at a passenger when complaints of Noah’s crying goes to far. After letting off steam, Alistair and Joanna continue their journey. They soon stop at a shop as Alistair goes to buy supplies with Joanna following him in to. The couple return to the car only to find out that Noah has mysteriously disappeared. | |||||

Production
The Cry is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Helen FitzGerald. The series is produced by Synchronicity Films, directed by Glendyn Ivin and written for television by Jacquelin Perske.[6]
Filming for the series commenced in February 2018,[7][8] initially taking place in Australia.[7] Filming later moved to Scotland in April 2018.[9] Jenna Coleman, who portrays Joanna in the lead role, completed filming for the series in Australia and Glasgow in May 2018, so that production on the third series of Victoria could commence.[6]
Release
The Cry will comprise four episodes[10] and premiered in the UK on BBC One on 30 September 2018.[6] The series is set to air in Australia on ABC in late 2018.[8]
