The Covenant School (TCS) is a private Christian school. It is composed of a Lower School campus, located in the former McIntire High School in Downtown Charlottesville, Virginia for Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth grades. The Upper School Campus is composed of Seventh through Twelfth grades, and is located in Albemarle County in a building that was completed in 2002.

History

The Covenant School was founded in 1985, opening its doors with 46 students in grades K-6. By 1987, a full K-12 program was offered. The school restructured as a K-8 school in 1990, then added grade 9 in 1992, grade 10 in 1994, grade 11 in 1995, and grade 12 in the fall of 1996, graduating 43 seniors in May 1997. A Pre-K program was added in the fall of 2003. Covenant has continued to offer Pre-K through 12th grade since this time. The 2007-2008 school year saw a peak enrollment of 710 students. [1]

Traditions

The Covenant School, in 2014, founded the House program. The House program allows students to deepen their community and hold leadership roles. A quadrant of communities within our Upper School, each House is named in Latin for the four cardinal virtues: Wisdom, Fortitude, Justice, and Temperance. Each House is led by a House Leadership Team—ten elected student leaders and a faculty Head of House who fulfill roles from president to community service coordinator to chaplain. Each individual at the Upper School is placed into one of the four Houses upon coming to The Covenant School. [2] The House motto is "For Others, For Christ".

Athletics

The Covenant School competes in 10 boys' and 10 girls' Varsity sports. The Boys' Cross Country team won the Division II VIS State Championship in 2006 and 2007, and the Girls' Cross Country team also won the VIS (State) Championship in 2007, 2015 and 2016. The Boys' Varsity Tennis team won the Division II VIS (State) Tournament in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 as well as the VIC (Conference) Tournament,[3] and then added a sixth consecutive state title in 2013 and a seventh state title in 2017.[4] The girls' lacrosse team won the state championship on the same date (May 18, 2013).[5]
