Lord Sugar begins his new hunt for a business partner for 2018 with a surprising twist for the new batch of sixteen candidates. In a break with tradition, he kick-starts the process by assigning the candidates to hunt down bargains abroad on the island of Malta, each seeking out nine items that celebrate its culture. Both teams face issues on the task, including a lack of communication, conflict over who negotiates, confusion over one item that is required, poor planning, and lack of control by their leaders. As the deadline draws near, the boys opt to get back to the airport on time to avoid a late fine, while members of the girls team gamble on getting a last-minute purchase before reuniting with the rest of their colleagues. When all return to the boardroom, the totalling of costs and fines reveals that the girls team's lack of co-ordination and negotiating skills was costly. Both the leader and her two choices soon argue over who was to blame for the loss, leading to Sarah Byrne becoming the first person to be fired.

For their next task, the candidates enter the world of comics to create a brand new title for the eight to twelve year old market, complete with an augmented reality cover, and pitch it to three major retailers. While one team focuses on creating something educational, dealing with issues in their design and a frustrating project manager, the other team go for a basic children's superhero story, but lack proper control from their team leader and emphasise of negative market research on their product when pitching it. The totalling of orders reveals that a gamble made by one member of the girls team paid off, leaving the boys team faced with criticism over the failings of their comic. Of the final three, David Alden is fired for his contributions to the team's failure, with the other two narrowly avoiding joining him over their performance on the task.
