Teresa Präauer (born 28 February 1979) is an Austrian writer and visual artist.[1]

Life

Teresa Präauer was born in Linz and grew up in Graz and St. Johann im Pongau.[2] From 1997 to 2003 she studied German language and literature at the University of Salzburg and the Humboldt University Berlin as well as painting at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. Since 2003, she lives and works in Vienna[3], where she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 2004 to 2005 as a postgraduate.[4] For her first novel For the Ruler from Overseas sher was awarded the Aspekte-Literaturpreis for best German-language prose debut. In 2015, she received the sponsorship award for the Friedrich Hölderlin Prize of the city of Bad Homburg for Johnny and Jean[5] 168/5000 and was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize. Teresa Präauer was nominated for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize at the Festival of German Literature in 2015.[6]

In the summer of 2016, Teresa Präauer held the Samuel Fischer Visiting Professorship for Literature at the Free University of Berlin and gave a seminar on Poetical ornithology. On flying in the literature. On May 25, 2016 she gave the inaugural lecture titled Animal.[7]

In addition to her work as a writer, Teresa Präauer also works as a visual artist. Her literary and pictorial works are closely related. For both areas she develops "actually two very similar ways of thinking". In her first publication Daubenbriefe von Dumb to other birds chicks, she combines drawings with poetic short texts.[8] In 2010 she illustrated the picture book The Goose on the contrary by Wolf Haas.[9] The birds, the flying and the crashes are also discussed in For the ruler from overseas. Among other things, the book tells the story of two children spending the summer with their grandparents.[10]

In her second novel, Johnny and Jean, an artist novel for which she, as with all her books, designed the cover,[11] The author leads the readers into the milieu of a contemporary art scene at an art academy, where younger and old masters of art history are quoted, and the artist Jonny in his imagination even gets into conversation with Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp.[12][13]

Some of her artistic works can be seen permanently, such as a book sculpture in the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, a painting in the Artothek des Bundes. Teresa Präauer also drew and wrote forRolling Stone.[14]
