Tejashwi Prasad Yadav (born 9 November 1989) is an Indian politician and former cricketer. He was the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, in Nitish Kumar government for twenty months. [1] He is the current leader of opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly and the youngest opposition leader in the country.
Personal life
Yadav is the second eldest son of the former chief ministers of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav & Rabri Devi. Besides being former CMs, his parents have also been Leaders of Opposition, Bihar [2] He studied until 9th class from DPS, Patna. He dropped out of school without completing his school education. He has been criticised by the opposition leaders for becoming Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar despite being a school drop-out; not a good sign for a state with lowest literacy rate in the country.[3][4][5]
Corruption case
The Central Bureau of Investigation registered a case of corruption against Mr Yadav, his father Lalu Prasad, his brother Tej Pratap Yadav, his mother Rabri Devi and several other members of the family on July 5, 2017. On July 27, the Enforcement Directorate registered another criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.[6] The Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar asked Tejashwi to resolve the matter or resign. The latter did neither, following which Nitish Kumar resigned, breaking the nascent coalition with RJD and going back to the old ally BJP, which was in the Opposition at the time, to form yet another coalition government.
Cricket career
Prior to his plunge into politics, Yadav dabbled in cricket as middle-order batsman in one Ranji Trophy match and two limited-overs games for Jharkhand. He was also a part of the Delhi Daredevils for its 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 Indian Premier League seasons. However, he did not play any match. [7]
Political career
He was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Raghopur constituency as a member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal in 2015.[8][9] He served as the deputy Chief Minister for the state of Bihar between Nov 2015 and July 2017. His elder brother Tej Pratap was also a minister in the Bihar government.[4]
