Tarentola protogigas (English name: First Giant wood gecko or Giant Fogo wood gecko) is a species of geckos in the family Phyllodactylidae. The species is endemic to the Cape Verde Islands, where it is found in the southwest portion of the Western Barlavento Islands, including Fogo, Brava and the lesser Ilhéus Secos[1] The species was named by Hans Hermann Schleich in 1984.
Etymology
The specific name is named after the Greek name for the "first giant" (πρώτο proto and γίγας gigas (Modern Greek: γίγαντας gigantas)).[1]
Taxonomy
The subspecies were elevated from Tarentola rudis protogigas by Vasconcelos, Perera, Geniez, Harris & Carranza in 2012.[2] Also that time, Tarentola rudis hartogi was placed under this species as a subspecies of Tarentola protogigas hartogi
