Tanhaiyan is an Indian romantic web series which aired on Hotstar on 14 February 2017.[2] It stars Barun Sobti and Surbhi Jyoti in lead roles.[3][4] The series included 9 episodes of about 20 minutes each.[5] It was produced by 4 Lions Films and distributed by Star India.[6]

Plot

The series starts with a marriage backdrop where the groom Siddharth's best friend is Haider Ali Khan, a typical rich womaniser, and the bride Avantika's best friend is Meera Kapoor, a fashion designer. Meera is a carefree non-judgmental girl and each is dealing with some kind of pain.

Haider and Meera casually flirt during the wedding ceremonies. Meera's other best friend Tanya confronts Meera about her feelings and tells her to let things go. Meera decides to prove to Tanya that she's not broken. She gets drunk and almost has a one-night stand with Haider, which does not happen when her implosion translates into a breakdown as she seeks validation from Haider that she is not broken. Haider realises that Meera is drunk and lets her sleep.

Meera realises that there is more to Haider than his Casanova image as she finds his respect towards her endearing. They mutually decide to accomplish the unfulfilled task in a sober state, and have their first "one-night-stand," which turns out to touch their hearts. Haider tries to find out if Meera felt the same way as he did, but considering the fact he's a Casanova, Meera hides her feelings for him and says that this was just casual sex for her. Hurt, Haider confronts her and she finally accepts that their first night was special for her.

Haider and Meera start spending time together and grow closer. He asks her the story behind her non-judgmental outlook on life. Meera tells him that she spent her entire life judging her parents for not loving each other until the day her father died in an unsuccessful attempt to save her mother from an accident. She now feels guilty for having judged them while they lived. This reminds Haider about his own guilt. When Meera tries to know what is bothering him, they have an ugly fight as Haider refuses to face his reality. He says nasty things to Meera, who decides to leave by accepting the job offer she had received from New York. It is revealed that Haider is haunted by the suicide of his best friend, Raza, who he was very close to but had to leave for job opportunities. Haider finally confronts the grief of Raza's death, and the guilt of leaving him alone, leading to Raza committing suicide.

Haider has avoided communication with Raza's mother after Raza's death. On the day Meera has to go, he goes to Raza's mother's and shares his pain. She tells him to move on in life, assuring him that Raza's unfortunate weakness was not his fault. Just as Meera is about to leave, Haider appears and confesses his love for her. The two reunite. Avantika reveals to Sid that she had a one-night stand with Sid's friend when the two were broken up, and Sid calls off their marriage. Haider and Meera clear the couple's misunderstanding and themselves decide to get engaged on the same day.

On the engagement night, Meera wears the earrings given to her by Raza. When Haider sees them, he browses through Raza's laptop only to find Meera's wallpaper. He realises that Raza was in love with Meera and is shattered. Mentally blaming her for Raza's death, he breaks off his engagement and moves to London. Meera is left heartbroken and repeatedly calls Haider to obtain closure but he does not respond.

After 6 months, neither Haider nor Meera has moved on from each other. Meera accepts the New York job offer. Raza's mother finally clears Haider's misunderstanding: Meera never even knew Raza. Raza's love was quietly unrequited, and Haider should stop blaming himself for Raza's death. On the day of Meera's departure, Avantika clears the air, leaving Meera shocked yet understanding of Haider's stance. She visits Haider's house and is surprised to see Haider there, waiting for her. He apologizes and they reunite, ending the series.
