T for Taj Mahal

T for Taj Mahal (2018 film) is an upcoming Bollywood feature film directed by 6-time President's National Award winning filmmaker Kireet Khurana and produced by Mumbai-based businessman and producer, Abis Rizvi and co-produced and distributed by Sony Pictures Networks Productions (SPNP). Rizvi was one of the victims of the terrorist attack in the Reina nightclub in Istanbul on 1 January 2017 in which 39 people were killed. The film is slated for a late 2018 release after making rounds at the international festival circuit.

Abis Rizvi Films has earlier produced Roar: Tigers of the Sunderbans. SPNP is known for Piku, Pad Man and Mubarakan. Kireet Khurana is known for Ajay Devgn-Kajol starrer, Toonpur ka Superrhero.

Plot

The premise of the film is about an illiterate man's journey to bring literacy to his village through a unique social enterprise. The original script, penned by Ashish Aryan, who hails from North India, was selected for the prestigious NFDC Screenwriter’s Lab for the Toronto International Film Festival. The script has been mentored by acclaimed International filmmakers like Oscar-winning producer Cedomir Kolar (No Man's Land, The Lunchbox, etc.) , Dutch Producer and film consultant Marten Rabarts and Script advisor Esther Van Driesum. Later the script was selected for Co-production market at NFDC film bazaar, Goa.

Cast

Raveena Tandon also does an extended cameo in the film. Local casting for the film has been done from Kaushambi District and Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Production

Development

Development of the film started in March 2016. After over 3 months of script research, development and location scouting, pre-production of the film started in July. After reconnaissance at several villages in the North-Indian belt, the team finally decided to shoot at the Bachanikapura village in Karari, around 60 km from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Casting

For the lead role, National School of Drama alumnus Subrat Dutta was selected. Internationally acclaimed Pitobash, known for his roles in Million Dollar Arm, Shor in the City and Begum Jaan, was selected to play an important role in the film. Notable Bollywood actor Manoj Pahwa and Hollywood actress Ali Faulkner (known for her roles in Twilight: Breaking Dawn and The Song) were also signed to play important pivotal roles in the film.

Filming

Principal photography for the film began in October 2016 and was completed in late November. The film was shot by Oscar-nominated Polish cinematographer, Michal Sosna.

Post-Production

4-time National award winning director/editor and FTII alumnus, Sankalp Meshram, completed the final cut of the film in early 2017 following which the Visual Effects of the film, done by Mumbai-based animation production house Climb Media, was completed in early March 2017.

The music has been composed by Advait Nemlekar (known for the soundtracks of Kaafiron Ki Namaaz and Gangster Newton)
