Sweet Revenge is the third recorded studio album of the English 1970's post-punk band Generation X.[1]

Production

The long-player was recorded at the Olympic Studios in Barnes in late 1979 with the producer Doug Bennett, but was left unfinished due to Generation X breaking up in acrimony during its production sessions, with the guitarist Derwood Andrews quitting the band, and the drummer Mark Laff being removed by the lead singer Billy Idol and bass player Tony James.[2] Idol and James went on in 1980 to relaunch the act under the new name of Gen X, salvaging several songs from the aborted recording sessions at Olympic Studios, and incorporating them into a new long-player release entitled Kiss Me Deadly (1981).[3]

Release & formats

The LP was retrospectively released via legal contractual obligation, without the consent of Billy Idol or Tony James - the material's composers, and in the face of opposition from Billy Idol who believed the demo material it contained was unfit for commercial release.[4]

The original 1979 sessions were first commercially released in 1998 under the title K.M.D. – Sweet Revenge,[5] and then later as a second disc of the Anthology boxed set in 2003 by EMI Records.[6][7] An expanded Japanese reissue titled K.M.D. – Sweet Revenge Xtra was also released in 2004 featuring alternate mixes, this version also contained different studio variations of the songs "Rock On" and "Your Generation," together with two live songs recorded at a gig in December 1978.
