2018 Indian Super Cup

The Super Cup, currently known as the Hero Super Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knockout football tournament in India run by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). It was established as the successor to the Federation Cup. The tournament features all the 20 teams that play in the Indian Super League and I-League, the two top divisions for professional football in India.

The first and only edition of the competition was held in April 2018. Bengaluru emerged as the inaugural winners of the tournament after defeating East Bengal in the final 4–1.

Format

The Super Cup is a knockout football tournament. The top six teams from both the top tier leagues for professional football in India, the Indian Super League and I-League, qualify directly for the main round of the competition.[1] The bottom five I-League Club Seven I-League 2nd Division Club four Indian Super League clubs from each league participate in qualification round to complete the 16 teams which participate in the pre-quarter finals.[1] The 2018 edition occurred at the Kalinga Stadium in Odisha.

History

On 19 February 2018, the All India Football Federation announced the creation of the Super Cup as a replacement for the Federation Cup, India's main knockout football tournament.[1] The qualifiers for the inaugural tournament began on 15 March and concluded on 16 March 2018. The tournament proper then commenced on 31 March and concluded with the final on 20 April 2018.[1] Bengaluru emerged as the winners of the inaugural edition of the tournament. They defeated East Bengal 4–1 in the final.[2]

Finals

The winner of the tournament is decided by a final elimination match at a neutral venue which lasts 90 minutes plus any additional stoppage time.[3]

Sponsorship and media coverage

The title sponsor for the Super Cup are Hero MotoCorp.[4] With the sponsorship, the competitions official name is the Hero Super Cup.[4] Hero MotoCorp is also the title sponsor for the Indian Super League and I-League, the leagues which comprise the clubs that take part in the Super Cup.[5][6]

Star Sports is the official broadcaster for the Super Cup, with all matches being broadcast on the channel and online on Hotstar.[7] Star Sports and Hotstar are also the digital rights holders for both the I-League and Indian Super League.[8]
