Sun Xueling,(simplified Chinese: 孙雪玲; traditional Chinese: 孫雪玲; pinyin: Sūn Xuělíng; born 1979) also known as Soon Sher Rene,[2] is a Singaporean politician and business executive. A member of the country's governing People's Action Party (PAP), she has been serving as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency since September 2015.

Education

Sun graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics.[2] Sun completed her Master of Science in International Political Economy with Merit from the London School of Economics and Political Science.[3][4]

Career

Sun started her career at the Economic Development Board in 2003 before joining DBS Bank Ltd as an Assistant Vice-President.[5]

She had also spent a large part of her career in Hong Kong and China (2007-2014), where she was a Director with Deutsche Bank AG based in Hong Kong and prior to that, Senior Vice President with Macquarie Capital Securities based in Hong Kong and Beijing.[6]

Sun was director of the Investment Group of Temasek International, focusing on investment opportunities in developing markets such as China and Latin America prior to joining politics in Sept 2015.

After being elected into politics in Sept 2015, Sun took on the role of CEO, Business China,[7][8] a non-profit organization started by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in 2007 to promote bilingualism and biculturalism. Sun also sits on the Board for the Chinese Development Assistance Council.

Political career

In 2015, the People's Action Party (PAP) announced that Sun would contest in the Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency during the 2015 general election[9] after being introduced during a tree planting event.[10] She now serves as Member of Parliament for Punggol[11][12] West. Sun also serves as the Women's Wing North East District Adviser in Singapore, and as Deputy Chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Communications and Information.[13] Sun also sits on the Government Parliamentary Committee for Trade and Industry/Finance and the Government Parliamentary Committee for Community, Culture and Youth.

Before 2015, Sun was a long-time grassroots volunteer in the People's Action Party at Buona Vista,[2] and is an advocate of women and mothers' rights.[3][14][15][16] She received the Service Award at the Young PAP Awards in 2004,[17] and was also the assistant secretary of the youth sub-committee of the Buona Vista Citizens' Consultative Committees under the People's Association in 2004 and became the assistant secretary of the committee in 2006.

Personal life

Sun is married with two daughters Sera and Sophie.[18] Her hobbies may include reading and swimming.[2]
