Kolej Islam Sultan Alam Shah (English: Sultan Alam Shah Islamic College; abbreviated KISAS; formerly known as Kolej Islam Klang) is a premier Islamic boarding school in Klang, Selangor. It was bestowed the title Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi (High Performing School) in 2010 by the Ministry Of Education.[1] Among others, the school is noted for its Silat and Nasheed teams.[2] The school has also played host for bench marking visits on areas such as Arabic Language, Public Speaking and Silat. In the recent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, the school obtained GPS of 1.27.[3]

History

Islamic College of Malaya (Malay: Kolej Islam Malaya, KIM) was founded in 1955 (1374 AH). KIM was built on a plot of land measuring approximately 14.3 acres located at Jalan Kota Raja, about a half mile from Klang.

The college was originally a palace, which was later donated by Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah al-Haj. He hoped that the college will produce scholars who fear Allah and this in turn illuminates the Malaysian society with spirits of Islam and to eliminate all forms of unbelief and ignorance there.

In 1966 (1386 AH), the college moved to a new building in Petaling Jaya (the current International Islamic University Malaysia Centre for Foundation Studies) and Bangi (the current National University of Malaysia Faculty of Islamic Studies), yet still continued its preparation courses in Klang.

In 1967, the college was taken by the Ministry of Education and had been made a government-aided school named Klang Islamic College (Malay: Kolej Islam Klang, KIK). Finally, in 1972, it was turned into a fully residential school with great facilities until today.

In 1989, KIK was renamed Sultan Alam Shah Islamic College (Malay: Kolej Islam Sultan Alam Shah, KISAS) by Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah al-Haj. Until now, the former Sultan's palace is still standing.

KISAS was recognised as a Cluster School[4][5] in 2007 and as a High-Performing School in 2010.[6]

Chronology of establishment

  • 1374 AH / 1955 - On 8 April, the opening of Islamic College of Malaya (name of college at the time) by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Al-Marhum Hisamuddin Alam Shah. The building is a palace of the sultan as his gift.
  • 1386 AH / 1966 - Highest course of Islamic College of Malaya was temporarily transferred to Petaling Jaya while retained its preparation course at Klang and name of college it was officially changed to 'Kolej Islam Klang' (KIK). At the same time the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, Malaysian Certificate of Education was introduced here.
  • 1387 AH / 1967 - The preparatory course has been taken over by the federal government and placed under the Ministry of Education. Klang Islamic College developed as a high school government aid.
  • 1389 AH / 1969 - Sijil Rendah Pelajaran, Lower Certificate of Education eliminated. Only candidates with the SRP and credits in Islamic subjects and Arabic pass acceptable into college. Form six courses are introduced.
  • 1391 AH / 1971 - Form four classes were opened to form four students.
  • 1392 AH / 1972 - Klang Islamic College turned into a Fully Residential School with great facilities.
  • 1410 AH / 1989 - Inauguration of the new name of Kolej Islam Klang to Kolej Islam Sultan Alam Shah (KISAS).

Achievements

1) Academics

  • Ranked the first all over Malaysia in SPM examination for two consecutive years in 2004 and 2005.
  • Ranked the first all over Malaysia in STPM examination for seven consecutive years in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.[7][8][9][10][11][12]
  • Ranked second all over Malaysia in SPM examination in 2000, 2007 and 2008.
  • Ranked third all over Malaysia in SPM examination in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006.
  • Ranked sixth all over Malaysia in 2010,eighth in 2011, sixth in 2012 and twelfth in 2013 in SPM examination.[13]

2) Co-Curicullar

  • National champion in Malay debate, English debate, Arabic debate, Al-Quran recitation, pantun festival, Career Day drama competition, King's Cup speech, Islamic oratory for boy and girl category. Was also a champion of all time in the competition, Malay Debate of the Prime Minister's Cup, for the Fully Residential Schools of Excellence Day (HKSBP).
  • National Runner Up in the design and innovation competition among the Fully Residential Schools (SBP).
  • National Second Runner Up in 4th Biennial Residential School English Drama Competition 2013 (National Final) and won the 'Best Male Supporting Actor Award'.
  • Champion of central zone Malaysia in F1 in Schools Competition.
  • Champion in Malay Gamelan Orchestra among the Fully Residential Schools (SBP) for two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012.
  • ALKIS GEMAWAN (AWAN) won Runner Up in the National stage for Malay Gamelan National Festival and won the 'Best Traditional Song Award'.

Learning system

Learning system in the Sultan Alam Shah Islamic College curriculum is set by the Ministry of Education. In addition to the three conventional exams (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM),Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM)), students can choose to take a special internal examination of the Sijil Khas Kolej (SKK) also known as Special Certificate College but it is compulsory for Islamic social science stream students. The school consisted of students from Form Four, Form Five and Form Six.

ALKIS is also known as the Islamic College Alumni Association, Klang, Malaysia or Alumni Kolej Islam (ALKIS).

AWDA 2018

On 2 and 3 Feb 2018 the fist ever reunion of its kind, an open gathering for all alumnus and teachers since the schools establishment since 1955 under the program AWDA (Kembali). Conducted mainly by the Batch Nasar SPM97 of KISAS, ALKIS, PIBG and KISAS itself, the 2 day event was attended by more than 2000 participants. A sub program to collect funds to buy the school a new Coaster bus ended with RM450,000. [15]
